I would firstly like to begin by advising people not to listen to David Hanman and Francis as they come across as individuals who enjoy faulting everything. Either that, or they sailed on a completely different ship to me! Personally, if someone’s holiday is ruined by the fact that the ships atrium sells items which may not appeal to every passenger, then this person cant have a lot going on in their life.
Embarkation at the Mayflower Cruise Terminal in Southampton was extremely fast, and was no hassle at all. Fine food was already laid out, before we were permitted to proceed to our suite! Judging the food overall, very good, and I would go to the extent of saying that the food served at the Horizon Grill in the evening was superb! Okay you have to pay an additional £9 at the Horizon Grill, but the food was of such high quality, I would of happily paid £30!
I found that the service on the whole was also very good. I thought that all members of the staff that I encountered were friendly, polite and efficient. However it was slightly annoying when we discovered a £112 service charge on our ship account invoice. Without being notified, the reception staff were adding £8 a day to cover service. We were originally furious, however the reception were more than happy to remove the charge. If this happens to anyone, please don't think that it is compulsory, as it is simply advised that each passenger pays £4 a day to cover cabin steward and waiter staff service.
The onboard entertainment was excellent, especially the dancers named www.westend, who performed several times during out cruise around the med! I loved Oceana's public rooms, I thought that every room's decor looked reasonably modern, and the Yacht and Compass was decorated authentically, to make it look like a British Pub. Our suite was considerably smaller than we thought it was going to be, however it was homely and cosy, so overall we were more than happy with our room. The balcony was of a good size!
I have been used to sailing with Fred Olsen Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines, however I now feel that I will stick with P&O Cruises for a while. Oceana is a big ship, it did take me quite a while to find my way round, but because of its size, it had a lot facilities, most of which targeted at younger ages. As P&O continually boast, Oceana is a family friendly ship; therefore a majority of its facilities are more suitable for young - middle aged passengers.
Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I loved Oceana as a ship, because she’s modern, big and British, and I was very proud to be aboard her. Because of Oceana and P&O Cruises, we have already booked another cruise, however on the latest Ventura, which will be taking us to 12 islands in the Caribbean during November of this year. Because Ventura is larger and is said to be more family friendly, I am very excited.
For those considering to book a cruise aboard Oceana, don't hesitate and listen to people like David and Francis......Go for it!
