We are just back, having spent 2 fabulous weeks aboard Thomson Destiny. We travelled on 23rd June and it was our honeymoon.
This was my 2nd cruise, having been on Thomson Spirit last year, but was my husband's (cannot quite get used to calling him that yet!) 1st cruise, so here goes for my review :
We arrived at Palma airport and did "The Walk" to get our cases, if you have never been to Palma airport then be prepared to walk!! After a very easy transfer we arrived at The port to board the ship, again, a very easy process with no hiccups. When you board the ship a member of the staff is there to escort you to your cabin, cases are delivered approx 1 hour after you board, which was not a problem. When we arrived at our cabin we found Thomson had supplied us with a fabulous arrangement of flowers, chocolates and a bottle of ice cold moet in an ice bucket....very very nice touch. The maid.... Tina arrived and introduced herself and then asked us if we would like a double bed because it was our honeymoon!! Nothing was too much trouble for her, she is a star.
The cabins are small, but you are only in them to sleep or get ready for dinner, was not really an issue, although I agree the walls are paper thin, we heard an elderly couple next door to us discuss what he was to wear every day!!! We stored our suitcases under the bed, there was adequate storage for my husband and I to hang clothes. Had a problem once or twice with the toilet, (its a vaccum system) but when we reported it it was fixed straight away.
The ship is immaculate, every minute of the day it is being painted or cleaned, the staff work like trojans, the public toliets are cleaned every hour and supplies replenished. Plenty of sunbeds, and your mustard coloured towels for them are delivered every night to your cabin, so be sure to leave the dirty ones in bathroom for maid to replenish.
Food onboard the ship was excellent, Seven Seas was where we had dinner every night, its a 6 course affair, and I never managed to have 6 courses on any night! They have retained the set place seating, which I was not really very sure about, but we were very lucky in that we were at a table for 10 and the 8 other people were great, only 4 of them left after the 1st week, so we all stayed at the same table on week 2, friends of ours (Jonny & Tracey and their 2 kids) arrived on our 2nd week, so the waiters (with prior arrangement a few days before) sat them at the same table, which was really really good, (although Jonny may not agree!) Our waiters Kenneth and Sileno were excellent, only too happy to help. Angel (without wings) made a point of speaking to you every night and shaking the mens hands, some more than others...eh Jonny??
We tended to have breakfast and lunch in Lido, as we could sit on our own, a few times we did go to Seven Seas we were seated with strangers who in our experience, just did not talk to you, which I found awkward. My only gripe about the Lido is that it is very "Cafe" like, and the tables and chairs are so close togehter, where as the Lido on the Spirt was more like a restaurant, but less formal than dining room, the food in Lido was superb, cannot understand why a few people have stated you cannot see what food you are getting, the only time this happens is at breakfast, and you can see it, its just that you have to ask chef for what you want instead of helping yourself, but this was by no means a problem to us, food was always very fresh and the hot stuff was hot. We visited it a few times late at night following a wee jig in Neptunes!!
Staff onboard the ship again excellent....Tony from the Chart Room, what a star this man is, cannot praise him enough, a gentleman, another gentleman is Edward who was in the Clipper Bar, very funny man, who could not do enough for you, we saw Georgi who worked on the Spirit too, Lilia (looks a bit like a young Celine Dion) lovely bar waitress, and very funny Also Louise from entertainment staff, she came and spoke to us as she knew we were going onboard thanks to her Mum, Laine you daughter is lovely!
Stephen Guy is another ex Spirit member of staff,he is the Cruise Director, and a fabulous singer. I understand where the person on a previous review is coming from, because it does get to the stage that you are fed up listening to him on the tannoy, and if you are having a siesta then it does wake you up, cos you cannot turn it off!!!
Entertainment onboard the Destiny is excellent, my favourite show was Moulin Rouge,I saw it last year, but still really enjoyed it this year, I did not find the entertainment all the same as it was on the Spirit, a few things were the same, but thats not a complaint.
We found the excursions a little pricey, we did Rome DIY as I had done it last year and was confident enough to do it again, we booked to go to Pompeii and Sorrento £43 per person, really enjoyed it, but if you were in a family group it would work out expensive to do a few trips. We also did Barelona DIY as you are only 10 mins away from centre if you go by shuttle bus or taxi, but be warned, the shuttle bus is very very popular and you may have a long wait, we got a taxi along with Jonny, Tracey and the kids and another couple, worked out at 15 euro so was only 5 euro for each couple, bus was 1.5 euro each, which is not really that much cheaper than a taxi.
Most ports we got off the ship and went a wander, Mahon was very nice, as was Corsica and Toulon, Palermo in Sicily......YUK! Horrible dirty place with rude people and scooters galore, be warned....they do not stop, even if green man is on, you take your life in your hands crossing the road!!
To sum up our honeymoon cruise........It was fantastic, we had a wonderful time, and my husband, who had never cruised before was talking about cruising again next year, after only 3 days onboard the Destiny!!!! (Im very happy about this, as Ive got the cruise bug, and I think he has it now too!!)
Thomson certainly do look after you, and we will not hesitate to book with them for next years cruise, which we think will be on the Emerald doing the Greek cruise.
