I can only imagine the folk at Ryanair are kicking themselves for not coming up first with this money making wheeze that an American airline is to introduce. (Hope Mr O'Leary doesn't read Holidaytruths, don't want to give him ideas!!)
Spirit Airlines, a US based "low"-cost airline has now introduced a charge for hand-baggage that you place in the overhead bins - on top of fees already in place for check-in luggage.
From 1 August a $30 (£20) fee will be made by the airline for each item of hand baggage placed in the overhead bins. Bags that fit under the seat will be carried for free. (Yipee).
The airline has apparently told the US Travel Weekly publication that the fee is to "speed up the check-in process". Not sure how but that type of statement would be the sort of rubbish I would expect someone at Ryanair to come up with should they go down that route. Even if the check-in process was speeded up can you imagine the fun and games in the aircraft as flight attendants go up and down the aisle questioning who has placed hand luggage in an overhead bin vs. under their seat, then try to collect a fee from a passenger"¦.
Hasn't this extra money grab got out of control? Can't we have a fair and reasonable price for flights? If the public can accept we can't get to fly to Europe for less that a bus fare into town can we get some of our basic flight inclusions back and built back into the cost of a flight. Is that too much to ask.
Admittedly, a charge for using the overhead locker would 'catch' me but other charges I can normally avoid

At first I thought some newspaper had fallen for an April fool joke but I've just checked their website and it's true. But reading carefully it isn't as bad as it sounds since they list a load of things they don't count as luggage at all (half the contents of my bag!) so if you've already paid to put your main bag in the hold there's a good chance of not falling foul of this rule. But there is a question, if your bag would fit under a seat but you get an exit row seat (where that isn't allowed) what would happen?
Never on a Ryanair flight early enough for those seats but the extra revenue might mean the toilet charge is held back for a while
