I thought fuerterventura was a Canary Island, therefore part of Spain therefore part of the EU.

Surely it even has the Euro. You must know what currency you were using if you were only there as as recently as April ?

If you were using Euros then it is part of the EU :)

don't know about being part of the EU for residential purposes but it's not part of the EU in terms of bringing back cheap cigs etc.

From Wiki
Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago off the African coast which forms one of the Spanish Autonomous Communities, thus having the status of being part of Spanish territory. They are outside the European Union Value Added Tax Area.

Having moved from UK to Cyprus some years ago, we find the Anglo Info websites are very useful so this link may come in handy: http://canaries.angloinfo.com/information/moving/residency/eu-citizens/

And, this Expat Blog may give some more inside information: http://www.expat-blog.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=378

I would suggest you pay particular attention to the section entitled: Health Care as you may find you might need to either pay privately or be covered by private medical insurance as new residents.

In Cyprus, you only get free or reduced health care treatment provided by the state (similar to the National Health Service in UK) if your salary is below a certain amount. If you're not entitled, you have to pay and generally a visit to a private GP will cost 50 EUR before any treatment or prescription is given.

I know we have one member who lives in Lanzarote and who posts on a pretty regular basis and will hopefully be able to give you more Spanish orientated information.

Lots of luck with your future life in Fuerteventura. Hope it's a huge success.

You can also look on http://www.expatforum.com and click on their Expat Country Forums section (second tab at the top left) and then their Spain forum also http://www.britishexpats.com/forum/ and then under Europe their Spain forum.

Loads of expats frequent these forums and answer questions all the time, Holiday Truths is really a holiday forum, you need an expat forum.

There is lots of info about becoming a resident after 90 days and a tax resident after 183 days, working legally rather than illegally, info on how to get health care etc

Hollyrachyx, you don't need a visa to go to Fuerteventura, but if you are going to be working in your relatives bar you will need to be put under contract, and for that you will need to get residencia as soon as you get there. I live on Lanzarote, so I don't know the offices you would go to in Fuerteventura. Once you are under contract free healthcare will be available to you as your employer will be paying into the social security system. If you are going to be working illegally you will not be able to access the healthcare service at all, and will need private health insurance.
