bristol chick - I'm afraid it is. I usually pay with my Tesco Card - at least that way I get some reward vouchers towards my next holiday.
Helen you're a lifesaver, cheers hun.
I like to use a CC for the extra protection it provides. I hate paying those charges though. If you just pay your deposit on the CC and the balance on your debit card (often no charge) you still get the CC protection for the whole holiday. The deposit has to be more than £100.
Really? I didnt know that if you only pay the deposit by CC then you're still covered. Thanks for that.
Afraid so. A few years back we booke d abig holiday that cost over 4 grand. The travel agent wanted to levy a 4% charge on that (£160+). We withdrew the money from the bank and paid it in cash. We also told the guy that we had told everyone what we were doing so I hoped he had a good safe so the armed robbers wouldn't get it after I left!! A bank manager friend told me that his bank would charge him for counting it when he paid it in!
It is once again one of the few industries that charge their customers for credit card handling fees. Similar to it being one of the few industries where you pay for your product weeks in advance without even experiencing any of it.

Yes and not guaranteed to get what you pay for.
The holiday company do not pay 2% cost for using your card, they pay around 1% to 1.5% so another nice little earner. The way to get the charges back is by going through quidco and getting some cash back.
I wasnt charged CCC on my May holiday booked with Portland.
I paid the balance of my Direct Holidays booking with my credit card (not a Thomas Cook card) on the automated system and haven't (yet) been charged the fee. Don't know if this is a one off or a blip with their system - not about to phone them to find out either!
I had to pay the balance on my holiday on a credit card, paid it off 1 month later and nearly £60 interest, and having to pay by credit card cost £60 credit card fee. I was not happy at it costing me an extra £120 and when I booked it I forgot to go through quidco and missed out on £120 cash back
It has already been said pay a deposit of at least £100 on you CC and the balance as you wish. think of it as insurance.

In my case I had no option but to pay with cc, I mis-timed notice I had to give to withdraw money from an account, and I did pay the deposit by cc.
I did not bother as it would actually cost me 90 pence to park the car when I went. Current interest rates are so bad it would be better under the bed.

nicjw - I wasn't charged the fee when I paid the deposit to Thomas Cook with my Tesco card, but was charged when I paid the balance
Helen, when I booked I paid the low deposit by credit card, just over £100 as I recall and was charged the fee around £3 I think. Paid the remainder of the balance by debit card so no fee. Then I paid the balance by credit card beginning of June just over £1400 so looks like I struck lucky as I definately haven't been charged
Pity the likes of Ryanair don't charge 2% - booked yesterday - cost of flights £4, card handling charge £20.I'm not grumbling too much as £24 for two return flights to Italy is cheap by anyone standards and if I'd had a Electon card I could have got the flights for £4 - but there's no way it costs £20 to process a debit card payment.
These latest Ryanair £1 flights must have just come out as I booked to Denmark today for next March for a total of £12. The card handling charge is quite ridiculous but the bottom line is that the total price is very cheap so I'm quite happy,
