David I would say your chances are slim to be honest, but you never know you may get lucky?

We saw an England v France live egg chasing match 4 years ago via some south American channel.

You may get highlights on news channels etc.

Lets hope I'm wrong!

You should be OK and get ESPN who will show the matches

It's highly unlikely that the local state owned Cuban TV network will be showing World Cup matches as football isn't that big over there - baseball is the national obsession - and they almost certainly won't have thought it worth while to bid for trnasmitting the tournament! The best you can hope for is that the hotel has access to a satellite network that will be showing matches as at best most bars will only have TVs showing the local programming if at all.

Yes the games will be on, i saw the last world cup there, they will be shown on ESPN. :tup

But I though that ESPN was an American owned company - how do they get around the US embargo which forbids US companies to have any dealings with Cuba, including via intermediaries?

PS Re the time difference - Cuba is going to be around 5-6 hrs behind South Africa. So any evening matches that you manage to catch being televised live will go out in the afternoon but expect to have to get up early to catch live any matches which take place in the early afternoon in South Africa.

Not very easy to shut down a dish to one country.

Looks like I've started a little bit of a debate here!

Re: the time difference. The last 16 & Quarter Final games kick off at 16:00 & 20.30, the Semi-Finals & the Final at 20:30. So I should (as long as they are shown!) be able to watch them without too much difficulty.
As it's Cayo Guillermo we are going to, apart from booking some trips or going for looooooooooong walks, I doubt if there will be much else to do to while the time away!
Many thanks for all replies.

LOL!

I'll be supporting Algeria as Madjid Bougherra plays for Glasgow Rangers! It's the closest I'll get to seeing anything remotely connected to Scotland at this years World Cup.Well, that plus they are in England's group!!

I forgot to mention that DaMarcus Beasley and Maurice Edu, also from Rangers will be representing the USA who are also in Englands Group. Sorry boys!

When we were in Cuba in November, we managed to watch Chelseas v's Man Utd on a TV in one of the hotel bars and it was packed! I'm sure with as something as big as the world cup you should be able to find somewhere that shows it.

Hello again!

I feel like I'm stalking you! Cheers for the reply. At the end of the day it won't be a life or death situation but with little or nothing to do in the Cayo's it might be a pleasant change.
Thanks again.

Can't wait 'til the 29th of June! Is it too early to start counting "sleeps"? :)

Dave, I watched Scotland get robbed of their chance to qualify whilst in Playa Pesquero. :(

However, one of our greater achievements in Cuba was persuading the government and hoteliers to add FOX Sports to their package, mainly for Premiership coverage. I´ve been gone for nearly a year now so cant comment on the current state of affairs but be sure to pester the animation team once you are there to find out the venues that will be screening the matches and a programme of what matches will be shown.

Cuba is a bit bizarre for tv coverage as they have American CNN news coverage in most of the hotels in Cayo Coco and Guardalavaca as well as a few other American channels. Occasionally some channels will mysteriously disappear for a few days then may or may not reappear! But I found it quite ironic to be there and watch an episode of Family Guy featuring Fidel himself! Cayo Coco had the best choice of channels in english including CTV (Canadian) and Discovery Channel.

Start counting sleeps and go Algeria!!! :clap

We were in Cuba for the last world cup and were pleasantly surprised to find that the hotel (Playa Pesquero) had installed TVs at every bar including the two pool bars. The TVs were permanently tuned to the football or music or off when there was no football.
We enjoyed it so much that I would like to go back this year just to watch it, but unfortunately income no longer matches desire!
