Please could anyone tell me that if you bank with Abbey in the UK you will not be charged for any cash withdrawals from the ATM machine whilst holidaying in Tenerife, providing you use a Banco Santander ATM machine.

It looks as if they charge you no matter what you use. See the information here

most uk banks charge a small amount to take money out from the atm's.

nationwide is good for as it dont charge to take money out.
