Hi, Can anyone recommend what type of cabbin bag thay take onboard when flying. Thanks. Twizz.
But you can get them for much cheeper!
Your airline should have it's own set of guidelines, but when you're looking at bags, check for the label saying "suitable as cabin baggage" don't forget to feel the weight before buying, the lighter the better!
Try Matalan, Primark, or outlet stores like Cheshire Oakes! They're everywhere! My mum's was free from La Redoute, has lasted for years and has never let her down!
but when you're looking at bags, check for the label saying "suitable as cabin baggage
A lot of cases on sale have this misleading label on.
The maximum size for hand luggage differs between airlines.
I've recently been looking for a trolley-style bag to use as hand luggage on a Ryan Air flight.
Their website says 55cm x 40cm x 20cm.
Easyjet, Thomson & BMIBaby are the same.
Jet2 is 46cm x 30cm x 23cm.
Flybe is 50cm x 35cm x 23cm.
BA is 56cm x 45cm x 25cm and specifies these measurements are INCLUDING WHEELS, POCKETS AND HANDLES.
I'd guess the other airline specs include these too.
A lot of bags had the label 'suitable as cabin baggage' but when I measured them, they were bigger than 55 x 40 x 20.
When I queried it with the sales assistant she said they were either old labels that applied before hand luggage sizes were changed or that they were within the BA limit but maybe not the budget carriers.
Also, don't believe the sizing on the label.
I've measured cases and most are bigger than they say.
If the case you intend using as hand-luggage won't fit into the guide at the airport, you'll have to check it in - and pay for the privilege - if you're flying budget.
Caveat emptor!

PS - just noticed on the First Choice website that their maximum hand baggage specifications are:
45cm length x 35cm width and 20cm depth including wheels, handles and side pockets
Less than the budget carriers.:yikes
I've never trusted the trolley type cases because of this. I have a holdall which, although slightly larger than stated, 23 cm rather than 20, will fit quite easily into the 'cage' at Stansted if it is not over-filled and, as Ryanair allow 10 kg of hand luggage, I find this quite adequate for a week, particularly when staying with friends so not needing to pack so many 'extras'. I also have a smaller nylon holdall which weighs almost nothing but is quite strong, and very useful for packing shoes, beach towels etc.which may take your hold luggage over weight. If I don't actually need to use it on the outward flight I pack it in my suitcase so I have spare capacity for the flight home.
