Shirley I would hire a car for the day as a taxi would be costly and you can go at your own pace.I think its about a 3/4 drive from Elounda which is beautiful and a short ride over what was a mountain road to Ag Nik.They were widening this road when we were there 3 years ago and the view from the top to Spinalonga is stunning. The ferry leaves from the small harbour in Elounda every 30 minutes.
Are the roads well sign posted. I remember the time we hired a car in Corfu (16 years ago ), we didn't have a clue where we were going and ended up getting lost
The road from Stalis to Ag Nik is a main road and although we didnt hire a car a couple we met in our hotel in Elounda did and found the roads fine.Have a look on google earth and it will tell you the exact distance and directions from one to the other.
There is a regular bus service from Stalis to Ag Nik, I do not know what the fares will be next year.
The bus service also operates the other way to Hersonissos and Heraklion. From Heraklion you can
get to the rest of Crete. By using the buses you can see much more of the island.
THe bus sounds like another good option. We can have a or two then at the harbour. Cheers!
I was in Stalis in September with my girlfriend. We hired a quad and drove accross to Agios Nikolaos. Took us about an hour. Its one main road that leads you from Stalis to Ag Nik so you can't really go wrong. Its a nice drive accross and the roads were pretty quiet until you got into the actual resorts. we were a little apprehensive about driving on the main road but found it to be very safe. We went on to Elounda from Ag Nik and this took us about 30 minutes more. The views as you leave Ag Nik and drive up along the coast to Elounda are breathtaking. Both resorts are well worth a visit, as is the Old town of Hersonnissos set up on the hill away from the sea.
Steve
bus: you have to follow their timetable etc. for a bus from agios-elounda again you have to make sure there is a connection and same for the way back
taxi: costs a fortune and its pointless as when in agios you will have to find another way of moving to elounda
bikes+quades: DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT use quads of the main road. i have seen many accidents/deaths due to those death traps. better take a bike.
car: by far the best option for me
now trip to elounda. as someone else said there is a boat going from elounda to spinalonga very often. from agios most of the boats depart at around 12 and are back 4-5 depeding weather conditions.
roads in crete. North crete is well developed even though we still have some problems. from where you will be all the way to elounda you will have no problems at all.
