Flight Only / Airline and Airports

Discussions relating to flight only, airlines and airports.

Personally, the last thing I want to do at the airport is go shopping. I'm normally at my baggage limit before getting to the airport so adding more luggage is the last thing on my mind! I go to the airport to catch a flight, that's it. As I don't smoke and rarely drink, there's little else on sale that I'd want really other than a magazine and maybe a chocholate treat or two to watch the in flight films with. Duty free isn't really cheap these days depending on where you're going and what you're after so for me, it's airports for flying and shopping centres for shopping.

I agree with Darren, other than alcohol and tobacco (and then only if travelling outside the EU) there is nothing at the airport that you can't buy cheaper in the high street or on the internet. The "price promise" that the airports used to proclaim has been quietly dropped as fleecing the passengers for every penny possible became the objective. Airport purchases for me are confined to a coffee and newspapers.
Also, if you travel with some of the budget airlines that rigourously enforce their "one piece of hand baggage" rule - anything you do buy at the airport must fit inside your one piece or it is either confiscated or you pay through the nose for one of the bags to go in the hold at the gate.

Cheers,
Ralph

I'll have a quick walk around the duty free, but will rarely buy anything. I find the perfume cheaper to buy online than in the airport these days. The airport for me is somewhere to have a bite to eat and a couple of :cheers

Ill have a wander but only buy some water, chocolate and a couple of magazines. Daughter has to buy a teddy, its become a bit of a tradition, and she then cuddles it to death for the whole time we are away. Airports are expensive and you can get most things cheaper either in resort or at home. Always buy pringles on the plane though, they just dont taste the same if you buy them before

My missus uses the shops quite a bit, always popping into Boots for stuff, M&S for bread, ready meals for tea , cakes and snacks , my 2 bottles of baileys for xmas etc etc . The shops are really useful for all the staff that work there.

Depends on how well organised I have been before the holiday.

I would rather not shop there, would prefer to relax and have something to eat & drink. However I have been known to be in accesorize buying sparkly flipflops or a beach cover-up due to not having got them prior.

On one holiday last year I was busy buying travel insurance - how embarassing for a member of HT, I should know better, but just couldn't remember if I still had my 'free' insurance that came with my bank account and was too frightened to take a chance.

Living out of the UK, it's a treat to be able to browse in WHSmith and any book shops at a UK airport! Also enjoy Accessorize, Body Shop and Glorious Britain for bits that I can't get 'at home'. When Stansted had a Past Times I was guaranteed to leave the UK poorer than when I'd gone through security!

Bit the same as Alsa for me. I usually head straightaway for W.H.Smith and especially if I am flying with just handluggage I leave any purchasing in Boots until I am airside.

I rarely buy anything from the dutyfree shops, but will have a wander round if I have plenty of time. I did buy a clutch bag from Accesorize though when I was in Heathrow last November.

When I fly in to Munich I can do a full grocery shop at the airport before driving home as there is a large chain Supermarket in the shopping area landside.

Not so much enjoyment but more a killing time exercise before the flight.

When we flew from Gatwick to Barbados this year I did a shop in boots, other half bought a super dry t shirt and some saddles and he got me 2 bottles of champagne which I was pleased with as it cost a fortune in Barbados! On our return in Barbados airport he bought a book some aftershave some channel for me and another couple of bottles of champagne! So yes, I do shop at the airport and love every minute of it :rofl

Same as Les, more to pass the time than anything else. We like to be at the airport by the time check-in opens so find we have time to spare even after having a bite to eat and a drink or two. We normally fly from Cardiff or Bristol so there aren't many shops to browse (Cardiff is pathetic) but I like a wonder round the duty free and sometimes buy some perfume or cosmetics. I'll also buy a magazine for the plane and a bottle of water.

Only in Boots or WH Smiths if friends have asked me to take something out which they can't get abroad and I haven't got round to picking it up locally. I find everything is seriiously over priced. Once I had to get some cheap gloves as I'd forgotten mine and was going to Denmark where it was quite cold, except that they weren't cheap. I made the mistake last year of picking up a packet of cigarettes to last until the shops opened after I arrived and they cost over £10 - never again.

I find airport shopping both expensive and a bit of a bore. This last trip to Cuba, even with 30kgs of baggage allowance, I was pushing it with the weight (long story so won't go into detail as to why!) and had reached my 5kgs limit for hand baggage too, so decided that I would stock up on toiletries and suncreams etc at the Airside Boots after security. I was gutted to find just how much more expensive everything was. For example, I'd bought Soltan sunscreen on a 3 for 2 offer on my local high street but left it behind in order to shave the checked-in baggage down, only to discover that it was not only not on offer but it was actually more expensive per bottle anyway! Never again!

We normally get our sun lotion and some toiletries from boots. As we take kindles we don't bother with books but maybe a magazine for the flight for when we're not in the mood for a full on read. People say it's the same deals and price in Boots, but we managed to pay £70 one year for a few bottles of suncream and we stuck with the boots soltan brand.

This year we have an extra 5kg so I'd rather get my sun lotion and toiletries from home bargains at home for 1/6 of the price; maybe just a bottle of water from WH Smiths this year.

It's the same with the alcohol. You used to be able to get a couple of bottles of whisky or gin for £15 but now it's gone up a lot and you can often find it cheaper in the supermarket. Unfortunately you can't buy it there as it's too heavy for your hold luggage and liquids can't go in your hand luggage so they have you over a barrel.

I'll nip into Boots if there is one, to get a meal deal for on the plane. I might have a nosy on Friday at Leeds Bradford to see if there's a Clinique outlet as my mascara has run out. I bought one on North Sea Ferries and it was a couple of £'s cheaper so will price it up. :tup

SMa I was always lead to believe that Boots products were the same price airside as they are in the high street. Its handy to know thats not the case.

I think they've all cottoned on to the fact that you're a sitting duck once you walk in there, as you're either after something you urgently need and forgot to pack or thought would be cheaper airside. By the time you find it's dearer it's too late, as your need is still as urgent. :banghead:
