Mythos lager is popular in most places. Local drinks can be a bit hit or miss,but we have had many good wines over the years. The imported spirits can be expensive.

I heard that the wine and beer was not that good

I don't know where you've heard this, but the beer is mostly Mythos or Amstel and is fine if you like normal lager, although if you're used to real ale or export strength lagers, it may not be to your taste. Greek wine has improved tremendously over the last 10 years or so and compares well to the average UK supermarket plonk from California, South Africa, etc. Again, if you're used to drinking wines costing £10 or more a bottle, it may not be quite to your taste, but it improves after the first couple of glasses

The main two Greek specialities are ouzo, an aniseed based Pernod-like drink which is excellent drunk before a meal as an apperitif and Metaxa brandy, which is more usually taken after meals. In some restaurants, whilst waiting for the bill you may also be ofered a small glass of raki (Greek fire-water) or something that I've never found out the name of, but it looks and tastes like a thick brown cough medicine - I'd advise you to knock this straight back, rather than sip it!

Cider and british beer like budweiser can be expensive.. but the local beer is nice...

Raki should be clear and often has a similar taste to Ouzo. Mournoraki, only in Crete ,can occasionally have a pale pink tinge. Glad you survived whatever it was they gave you!!

Just read your post again, the brown stuff is sickly sweet and fruit based, tastes OK ater a half of Sambuka. This is the spirit they normally use to set fire to the floor with at Greek nights.

That sounds like the best use for it.

I've never asked what it's called, because I would never order it by choice! But I suppose that after a few pre-dinner ouzos or beers and a few glasses of wine with my dinner, it goes down smoothly enough

We found the wine to be quite good just ask for house wine it tasts better after the first glass

Mythos lager is very nice, and you should try a few different local Greek wines as I am sure you will find some that you will like.

If you visit Sianna while you are there you can buy their local fire-water called Suma which is clear and is made from distilled grape skins - very much like Slivovitz, and very potent.
Wines are variable - Cair produce some nice ones : Athiri Rhodu, and Ilios which are white and Nisiotikos - red and white (both dry) , you can get the usual Retsina and Cretan and Cypriot wines, like Keo and Apelia; and, as has been said previously you can get european (imported) wines.
In restaurants wine 'by the kilo' (or half kilo) is often best as bottled wines can be quite costly.
Imported spirits are expensive to drink - but you will find you get a double or triple measure compared to home measures at 25mls!
