Alcudia's beach is arguably the best in Mallorca. The old town is not that far from the port area. Depending where you might be staying, it wouldn't necessarily be too arduous a walk. Perhaps you can mention which hotels or apartments you have in mind.

Santa Ponsa is fairly handy for Palma which has plenty of history.

Cala Ratjada is on the north-eastern coast. Very German. The main beach is not that big.

There is a brilliant bus service in Santa Ponsa which runs from the center of the resort to Palma. The journey takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending when you go. There is plenty to see here.

You can also get an "express" bus (102, I think) if you are going straight to Palma and it is alot quicker.
Have a good time.

hi,
well ive got as far as booking my flights for the 29 sept, trying to find a good aparthotel, as id like half board but my sons needs his own bedroom,, so the search goes on, half board is still expensive at the minute,so i could maybe end up self catering!!!!or maybe i should leave it for a month or two see if prices come down a bit,
as for the transfer a direct bus would be great, something ill have to look into, im getting squared eyed!!!!!!!!
thanks everyone for your help, greatly appreciated.
