Hi
I will have a stab at this, having lived and breathed the licensing laws for a few years!
Many people use a private transfer to get to their resort, rather than relying on the transfer coach or public transport. People/firms offering these private transfers advertise on various sources: websites, eBay, word of mouth, even in bars around the resort.
Unfortunately, there are an awful lot of these transfers that are illegal, unlicensed and therefore under or non-insured. Hopefully the following will explain how to make sure you are covered by picking a company that is fully legal to operate "hire and reward" transportation.
All public service vehicles have to display a "Tarjeta de Transporte" in the front window, normally on the drivers side. This is an A5 certificate that is only given to legal/licenced transport drivers or companies. By legal/licenced I mean the following: The company must be a registered Spanish business and also have the appropriate insurance, both for the vehicle and the passengers. Vehicles and drivers that hold the Tarjeta de Transporte also display an SP sign on the front and back of the vehicle. This is usually a metal plate or sticker on or around the bumpers. SP stands for "Servicio Publico" which shows that the appropriate licence is held.
Secondly, there are some other signs to look out for that will suggest that the driver and/or car is illegal. I will list them here:
If the driver asks you to meet them in a certain place, rather than via a name board in arrivals
If the driver asks you to meet in the carpark
If the driver refuses to drop you off or pick you up outside the hotel
If the vehicle is not located in the free designated coach or taxi parking
If the driver asks you to call him "Uncle Steve" or whatever in case the police stop the vehicle
If the driver asks you to give them a hug or kiss when they drop you off at the airport (classic!)
The implications of being caught are huge. If the police stop the vehicle and they determine that it is an illegal taxi the vehicle will be seized and you will be left stranded at the side of the road, or motorway or toll booth (another thing, illegal drivers often go the non-toll road to Benidorm as the police often have road blocks at the exits to the tolls). Also, there is talk of the passengers being fined too, as if the are complicit or knowingly using an illegal taxi.
Finally, imagine being in an accident in an illegal taxi? There will be no public liability insurance and your holiday insurance would be void too.
If you want to check whether you may have booked with an illegal company or individual ask them to send you a copy by email of their "Tarjeta de Transporte" license. Legal companies will be more than pleased if you explain the reason for this request.
These rules apply regardless of the number of seats in a vehicle, or the number of passengers carried. Without getting too technical, different types of vehicles do have slightly different licences (up to 4 passengers, up to 8 and up to 55), but the rules detailed above still apply.
Let me know if you need any more info.

Great post David Your business partner was telling me about the antics of the Spanish drivers and others who didn't want your legitimate business to succeed on the Costa Blanca, simply because you were British.
Hi David (mod) not david (dguette).
Unfortunately that would be copyright infringement Helen, but you could perhaps post a link on that forum to this topic.
My accomodation is residential, will we just be dropped at the nearest hotel?(it's just across the road anyway)
Sometime ago I read on a thread that there were a couple of UK Taxis operating from Alicante Airport to Benidorm at a very cheap rate. Has anyone got any contact details for these taxis as the price of the Spanish Taxis is very expensive compared to the UK.
Hi dgr .. I have merged your enquiry with the relevant topic, where you will find advice and recommendations on various transport options. Please take note of dgutte's advice above, regarding illegal operators.
is the pick up & drop off points easy to get to
The transfer will drop you off outside your accommadation or as close as is logistically possible.
Only private transfers will come to Terminal 2, shared shuttles stay in T1. I wish the shuttle companies would update their instructions on people's paperwork - every day I see passengers wandering around looking for buses.
I am thinking of booking transfers with Thomsons to Benidorm to go with my flight but booking a hotel with Alpha Room.I understand that they will drop me at a central location but does anyone know where this will be?
I have used travel republic a good few times for transfares using various coach companys with them. Never had any problems with any but do prefer Resort destination and care services and shuttle direct the best out of the companys they use. Resort hopper are ok only bad thing i had was them not dropping us off that close to hotel. They are good in a whole and quite cheep Travel Republic if you get a good deal go for it. Have fun.
Hi, I have booked a transfer from Alicante to Javea with Benidorm Express. Can anyone let me know if this Company is legal and how do you know a duff form a legal company anyway?.
I have just looked back on here and got some advice from David (dguette) and I have sent Benidorm Express and email asking for their License, but in the meantime has anyone used them who can reccommend?

Has anyone had any trouble with coach transfers from Alicante to costa blanca to the Flamingo oasis.
we went with Thomson and at the hotel waiting to come home, when the coach turned up the thomson Rep said she had a seat for my wife and I,but she didnt like my scooter which is a super Lite shoprider its smaller then a suitcase when folded and has dry cell batteries, she could the airline stickers 3 in total on my scooter so she could tell it had come on a airplane, now the fun started the driver just didnt want to know about my scooter this was a thomson coach with a Rep,she watched everything the driver loaded all the cases and prams until full then I had to drag my scooter around to the other side of the coach, again the driver loaded all the cases and prams again I had to drag my scooter to the back end of the coach, and finally the Rep said my scooter could go on the coach I had shorts on she could see the calipers on my legs I also have to wear a back brace at the airport I just dragged my scooter off and my cases before the games could start again. as everyone else who is disabled or needs a scooter for whatever reason had this sort of treatment from thomson airlines and there coaches before would like to heard from you to try stop this kind of treatment from carrying on I know the coach drivers in Spain are hit and miss at the best of times but when your on a airline coach with there holiday Rep you dont think they would just stand there and watch.
regards Fred
