Not sure about the price but your allowance from Tenerife or any of the Canary island is 200 cigs and 1 litre of alcohol above 22%.

Cig allowance from Tenerife is only 200 per person not that I ever stick to that when they are so cheap (unless someone from Customs & Excise is reading this then I always only bring my allowance back) Prices are pretty much the same for all brands. Between 16 and 18 euros per 200.

Have a look at THIS thread about allowances on the Fuerteventura forum, and be careful bringing back more than your allowance :!:

2 years ago at Manchester when we came back from Tenerife it took about 45 minutes to clear customs as they were checking everybody's bags and scanning all luggage for people who were bringing back more than their allowance in cigarettes. Those who had more than their allowance were given the opportunity to own up before the bag was scanned and the excess was either taken off them or they were made to pay the duty on them.

Funnily enough, when we got back on 14th March, exactly the same scenario...Stopped almost everyone at customs and the tables were absolutely laden with a mass of cigarettes and empty cases/bags lying around. First time we'd seen it to this level,to be honest!

Luckily we have never been stopped on our return to any of the London airports from the Canaries. My husband and I and two of our teenage children spent three weeks in Tenerife over christmas and New Year we had three suitcases between the four of us. As we came through the nothing to declare section at customs the man stopped us and asked how long we had been away for. When we replied three weeks he said OK that is fine go through. I don't know if he thought that was a lot of luggage for four people or what but that is the closest we have ever got to being stopped. So many people must risk bringing more than their allowance back, it's just a chance you take. I know we do. If we get caught then so be it, if we don't, hey ho.

If you don't mind which brand you smoke, you can get 200 for as little as £4.

OK so some of the Spanish brands are horrible and there are loads of Spanish brands so you are in a bit of a lottery, but if you choose carefully you can get some brands which taste like UK ones...

In the years I've lived here Ive tried the good, the bad and the ugly! Most expats I know have made the switch to the likes of the vast range that Coronas offer, or even better... "Viceroy" (from North American) which come in two strengths - blue/white pack which is milder than the red/white pack.

If your after menthol try "Coronas Menthol Fresh" (green and white pack)

If your a silk cut smoker try Coronas Silver or even milder the all white pack.

The Viceroy ciggs are very popular with English ex-pat smokers and cost €5.95 (about £4) for a 200 carton.

Coronas range from €3.95 to €6 for a 200 carton.

The "Spanish style" chain of shops seem to be the most consistent at keeping their prices low.

hope that helps.

Jackie,my uncle brought masses over his limit, for years and was never stopped..maybe it had something to do with the budget coming up.... Can't blame folk, considering the prices in the Uk!

you could always give up and save even more money.

You are right, we could give up and save even more but there are those of us who do smoke and those of us who don't smoke. I do smoke and have no desire to give up no matter how many people tell me to. If and when I give up it will be a decision I make all by myself. But hey, that's what makes the world go round different people with different views.

It's funny but as soon as this topic came up I knew someone would make the statement 'give up'.

Jackie,

I totally agree with you its down to the individual. I gave up some years ago having puffed away for over 30 years but it was my choice and the moans from my family to stop had the opposite affect.

My expectations of stories of 'smuggling' have also appeared.

Chris

ps I gave up when B&H were around £2 a packet

pps I guess one of the Admin guys will deem that this topic has probably run out of 'puff' and will lock it soon !

Smuggling - who would do a thing like that? :hmmm

Re: my Uncle,.... I honestly believe they were for his own use. He was an extremely heavy smoker! Smuggling, when on a large scale, undoubtedly goes on and yes it should be abolished for different reasons. I do appreciate both sides of the argument though, where in comparison, your average Joe Bloggs is taking a chance, trying to save some money. Not really the crime of the century,in my opinion....but,hey,that's only my opinion.
Sorry ,probably gone off the original topic here!!

:D Hi, my mum has just arrived back late this afternoon into leeds/Brad from Tenerife, her case was the very last one to come around on the ??? (Can't think of name  - the thingy that goes around with your luggage on!!!), she went through the nothing to declare, and heard a "Excuse me madam can we check your luggage", and this point she said her heart was on her mouth, and she could feel her face go bright red, she was taken into a room and three or four staff followed her in. They asked how many cigs she had in her bag , to which she replied 400, they then asked if they could look in her case, put their rubber gloves on and started looking through, then zipped it back up and let her go. (She had another 1,000 at the very bottom of the case, which they never found Or if they did, they said nothing (but I can't see that being the case - ). I said to my mum did they take 200 off you (From the 400 in her hand bag), she said no, "Your allowed to bring 400 back,( I'm sure it's only 200?), my aunt was with her was also searched, but she had only brought 400 back (For her son), and she was also ok with the 400.

My mum has now told us she is only going to bring the correct allowance back next time she goes, (As she doesn't want the worry of getting "Stopped again" next time she's away.), which is totally understandable (as she doesn't even smoke,- the cigs were for me, and my bro). She was told they are really cracking down on this, and she had spoke to a number of people who had been stopped (Whilst waiting for a taxi to take her home), just thought I'd share this with you all, and hope if your bringing more than your allowed allowance, you manage to get through custom's without being stopped  Regards, BBB.

Hi All

To be honest I think unless you are bringing back an absolute huge quantity of different brands which the customs could construde as being for resale when you get home they are pretty good. I would like to know how many customs people actually stick to the correct limit when they go away - or do they get special "allowances"

I'd like to think they have better things to do than spending time catching folk with a few extra ciggies (Other drugs :) Terrorism, illegal immigration.....
