Hi, we are visting Alvor as 1st timers this yr, just have a couple of questions if people can help?
What will weather be like? best places to eat, places to visit? etc..
We are stopping at the Alvorferias Apts, which have had VERY mixed reviews, anybody have any? (preferably good ones).
Also any suggestions of whether to use cash machines or take travellers cheques? Are their plenty of banks with cash machines to use?
Cheers
Hooky.
O WELL, I assume nobody has any info for me. Never mind... Not going till May, so you never know......
I've been to Alvor three times but have not stayed at complex you mention so cannot comment on it.
When I was there at end of May it was hot during day (at least high 20's every day) but did cool down in evening when a top over a t-shirt was usually required.
There are a few ATM machines in Alvor (limited to 200 euros a time for withdrawls) There is a charge from your UK bank for this unless you use an account such as Nationwide Flexaccount which doesn't charge.
There are so many restuarants in Alvor that even though I have been a few times I can't remember which one is which.
Alvor is a family orientated resort.
Hope this helps
When we went to Alvor approx 6 years ago we loved it. We ate out every night and not once did we have a bad meal, there are loads of restaurants to choose from and all reasonably priced. Hope you have a fab holiday.
I think Alvor is the nicest place on the Algarve. We've been twice and are booked to go again next year. I've never been in May only November and December, and had good wheather. So I imagine it should be hot in May.
The beach is beautiful and although small, Alvor is a really pretty place. The apartments you are staying at are a short walk from the beach. I've never stayed there but people I know who have, have said they are o.k. in the summer, a bit cold in the winter. They aren't 4 star, but you'll know that from the brouchure.
There are a lot of very good resturants, sorry I don't know the names.
As Alvor is small the banks are limited but you are very close to Portimao which has banks. We took cash and never had any trouble changing it at the hotel reception.
Hope you have a lovely time, we have each time we've been.

Sorry I forgot to mention that there is money changing facilities in the Alisur supermarket in town.
If you like dogs, the strays are lovely and friendly, please feed them.
Thanks

http://www.zoomarine.com/Start.htm thats a link to there website it well woth a visit .Hope this is of help to you and you can change money at reception in appartments cant remember there being an exchange in supermarket but there are other places around that do.
hi we stayed at the alvorferis appartments about 3 years ago in may and thought they were great we are a family of 2 aduls and 2 kids of 12 and 10 at the time and they realy liked it you can use both pools so if 1 is bussy you can use the other 1 at the other block of appartments the one away from reception and the bar is usualy the quieter. We had a 1 bed appartment and it was realy quite large compared to most we have stayed in in spain. The weather was great and we were there at the start or may. The beach is lovely and I am not a beach person you can walk round to little coves and the sea dose'nt shelve so my hubby took the kidds in swimming and they loved it. We did'nt have a bad meal in any resturants and we ate in a different 1 each night. If you have any questions just ask and i will try and answer.A day trip for you is Zoo Marine its great my daughter swam with the dolphins and is now desparate to go back and do it again it cost about £100 thats with the photos and the video and our admitance to the park We stayed in the Alvorferious apartemnts twice, in 2000 and 2002, two adults with a family of four children.
We had a two bedroomed apartment (it was massive) overlooking the pool area. The pool doesnt open till 9am so none of that getting up at 6am to reserve beds like some clampets do!
The balcony was really big, the apartment was clean, if slightly dated in appearance but this isnt a problem. The gardens are absolutely georgous with lovely trees and shrubs in full colour! There are two blocks separated by a bridge (over a road) but this is not dangerous, you dont need to go near the road to go from one to the other.
If I was giving you advice I would ask you to try and get the block which doesnt have the reception area, as it gets noisy, the other side has a much nicer and quieter pool area!
Its about 10 minutes walk down the hill into the village...........Alvor is beautiful and the residents are rightly proud of it, and are all really really friendly!
Lovely restaurantes and bistros, in my opinion slightly more expensive than the Costas, Tenerfie etc ....... but the bonus is you are staying in such a beautiful village!
We were there in August and although the weather was beautiful during the day, it gets very cool at night, so Im sure in May you will need your cardies when you venture out later on!
Also can I just say, that although you can get money changed at the reception area of the complex, you'll get a much better rate in the town itself at one of the banks.
Youll love Alvor
Will be putting a review on when when return. But not thinking about my return just yet, fingers crossed for the weather, but it can't get much worse than the typical british weather we are having at the momment.
You should visit tripadvisor.com which will give you details of your accommodation etc. Very useful website.
