Seen several news storys concerning thousands of assylum seekers coming into Tenerife.
Is this true ?
Are they a problem to holiday makers ?
The ones arriving on the small open boats are nearly always caught and detained. Then shipped to the Spanish mainland.

I've not seen one yet!!!
Though I beleive there is a huge marquee at the main police station where they are being detained in a cage until they can be flown to Madrid!!
Rest assured they are not wandering the streets
i think the uk has a much bigger problem than we do here !!!!!
The local authorities seem to have it well under control with the inflatable 'bouncy castle' type sheds on the quayside when the Africans land and need to be processed.
We all have opinions as to their actions and I will keep mine to myself.

Despite asking for help from the EU to patrol the Atlantic Ocean off the West African coast, they are still coming in more sophisticated boats with radar systems installed.
Whilst the vast majority are detained and shipped to mainland Spain, some especially the minors have been re-allocated and placed into communities in Tenerife.
I think the Governor of the Canary Islands sums it up quite well.....
Collateral damage.

I personally wouldn't class over 20,000 illegal immigrants who have landed on the Canary Islands this year so far, a minor problem.
They major problem might be these are the lucky ones who actually survived the journey???
As has been said the majority are detained and then moved back to mainland Spain till the authorities decide what is to happen to them but please let's not get into the arguments there have been in the past.
People should be aware that it is happening and that they may encounter some of them in the likes of Playa de Las Americas.
I'm sorry Darren as you had broached the subject but as you can see from the replies there are several points of view on the severity or not and there are other topics thoughout the forum on this that you can look at.
No further discussion on this topic as it has been discussed ad nauseum before.
