Great report Ann. We are going to the Phoenix Park in February next year - can't wait :)
Will probably think of loads of questions nearer the time.

Hi Ann

glad you had a great time, we've been back 3wks now and it doesn't get any easier

we booked at the weekend for Phoenix Park next yr, can you tell me if all rooms have balcony, if not any idea which rooms do and whether a request would be any good

this yr was the first yr with no balcony and it did make a difference to how i felt about the hotel as i love early morning and evening on balcony

thanks in advance

Hi Jayne

I have only stayed there twice and in the same block both times which had a balcony..You could pm Vegasone she has been there a lot more than me and knows the owner of the hotel too. She will probably have his email so you can make a request.

Hope this helps

Ann, great report !

Loads of memories there for me from my 2 weeks in January..Jazz House, Cactus, both great - but I have to agree with you about Taste Of China - I had the sweet & sour chicken, it was manky !

FC, I can't speak of highly enough - great aircraft ( we didn't go Star Class but booked the wing seats), service and everything else top notch.

We stayed at the Highland Beach, and our shack of choice was Sam's Paradise.

thanks again

probably too late to get a reply but here goes.
where did you book the chapora river cruise? Evelyn is a mussel fiend so I would like to give her the treat of spicy mussels instead of boring mussels in white wine.
Or do all the chapora cruises go to the same restaurant?
leaving in about an hour, so fingers crossed!

Hi Del

Booked it through Charlie who owns KC's Bar in Baga on the CSM
Road, he owns the boat.

Hope you both have a great holiday...

They have actually put a new zebra crossing from Don Fransisco to candolim health centre but as you rightly said it is ignored, and I dont intend to be the 1st to see whether it works. I would also like to know more details of Chapora trip, and have to totally agree a taste of china is the pits, the worst meal I have ever had.

Ann what a fantastic report!!

We're flying out for our first time on the 11th and I can't wait!!! Also going with FC in Star class - so you have made me one happy bunny with the glowing report of them v's monarch! (by the time we got round to booking I was refusing any Monarch flight - much to the travel clerks annoyance!!)

Am also a Mussle fiend - so will def be looking out for that trip - it sounds amazing!

Great idea about taking a taxi rather than getting the hot, sweaty, s l o w buss! Can I ask how much a taxi to Baga would be? I'd only have sterling at this point, would that be an incentive or a problem?? Would it take long? Sorry for all the questions!

Ohh one more thing - I know I'm pushing it slightly now!! Did you see the Biera Mar hotel at all? Thats where we're staying, I've read one report which is okay, would hate it though if we turned up and it looked god awful - so if you can help prepare me for the worst/best?!?!

Thanks in advance - I promise I'll write a detailed report when I get back - unless I waterlog my laptop with crying!

goldilocks,
quick reply whilst I am wating for taxi .
As far as i know taxi fare from airport is around 550/450 rps.
you can get enough rupees at the aorport, only get enough for what you need, don't know if the taxis accept sterling.
If you have time before you go ask at your travel agents if they have any rupees, you CAN get them over here sometimes.

Beira Mar, friends stayed there last year and said it was "OK", basic but clean etc.
hope this helps

Thanks Del! I hope you have a fantastic time!

Am happy if it's clean! Don't need much more when there are tonnes of beautiful beaches and new things to experience!

Hi Lin

You may know Charlie and Barbara who own KC's bar. We know of Barbara from back home in Manchester she and Charlie from Edinburgh got married a few years ago. Charlie started to run the boat trips about 5 years ago,but had problems last season with his licence; however the trip is now up and running again.

You have to book it from them by calling in KC's bar. They go out around 4-5 times a week and will take a minimum of 4 but no more than 10 people. Six of us went out a fortnight ago and you really get an excellent, personal service.

They will pick you up or pay for a taxi for you at around 9.30 in the morning to take you to the river. Once aboard the boat, (which incidentally is spotlessly clean and has a posh loo too)

They offer you drinks straight away and you can have anything you want tea, coffee, water, soft drinks, Kings and any short they tell you to just ask when you require another. They normally take two really nice Goan lads with them who drive the boat and prepare your drinks and food.

Sailing down the river takes around 3 hours and is always very, very hot. They stop at a small village, (the same one each time) where the local bar owner has already prepared snacks mussels and other fish delicacies and drinks. Often the local kids will pop in looking beautiful in their school uniforms, despite the obvious poverty within the village. All the locals also pop out to greet you too.

They also make beautiful jewellery out of coconut shells to sell, I bought a necklace and a bangle for 50 rupees which my 21 yr old daughter has already taxed off me as soon as she saw them! :(

After getting back on board you carry on down the river passing the cocklers and fishermen and lots of little villages where all the kids run to the shore to wave and shout to you.

Lunch is wonderful, chicken, bread rolls, salad, rice dishes, vegatable and meat samosas and Barbara's home made (out of this world) potato salad!

Then they go past the sand-dredgers and have an arrangement for anyone on the trip to get into the dingy over to the dredger to have a go at pulling up the sand from the bottom of the river using ropes and buckets...

This is usually a laugh as it is very difficult to do

The boat then turns around to go back and what a relief as an unbelivable cool breeze appears like magic!!...On the way back the boat stops off on the river side of turtle beach where you can go for a swim, take a walk on the beach or do a spot of fishing.

Charlie does his tour guide bit throughout the trip and points out different buildings/landmarks/wildlife etc and explains their history.

All in all it is an excellent trip, we have done it for four years and when you sign his guest book you will see that others have returned year after year too. We have also forged some great friendships with others on the trip and meet up for a drink the following night and even the following year!

Back on shore your taxi or jeep is waiting to take you back, this is around 5-5.30pm.

As I said in my report it is not cheap..think it was around 2500 rupees each but worth every penny.

If you do go on it tell them Ann and Harry from Manchester say Hi and will see them next season.

Regards
Ann

Goldilocks..Yep Del is right think it cost us 500 rupees to Candolim, perhaps 700 to Baga? Funnily enough the 2 other couples on our boat trip stayed at the Beira Mar and said it was fine, but they paid extra for aircon though which was needed!

Irishcolleen..Sorry my pics are on page 2 and 3 and I have just uploaded more that aren't there yet. They are someone elses of Teracol on page one, I have never been. PM Fiona so she can find out who posted them.
