Sorry you didn't enjoy your holiday. I spent a fair bit of time in Paphos on my
last 3 trips (the last time being December 05) and found the staff every place
we went to be more than helpful and pleasant I certainly didn't get the
impression they were fed up with the Brits
Yes there were a lot of tourists but I wouldn't say it was over touristy.

If you want to see metropolitan Cyprus, Larnaca is the place. You will be rubbing shoulders with more locals than tourists in the cafes and restaurants.
I've been going for about 15 years and it hasn't changed all that much.

Very touristy and built up, and if it wasnt built up is was a building site!!!!
We will be going to the other end of the island next time, near agia napa.
Oh well to each his own
we are going in 3 weeks to helios bay apts, thats put me off cyprus now, never been before so here's hoping

:D........ Im sure you will love It when you get there!!
I must admit though, when we last went to Protaras, we were very suprised at the amount of Building work that was going on....... and Im sure Its still going on now aswell........
....... I just hope It doesnt become over commercialised.......
At the end of the day, a Holidays what you make of It, Isnt It.

yeh me to going for my wedding with guests as well just wondering what to expect now!
Go with an open mind and I'm sure you'll love it as much as Kath and I do
I actually find the other end of the island touristy so it's each to his own

Somehow, I think not.
Everyone has an opinion of places they go on holiday, me I hated Minorca but I know plenty who think it's fantastic, so I'm going with an open mind next year and anyway, a holiday is what you make it.
thanks for that!

I liked Larnaca but we had no peace for a fortnight from cafe and restaurant owners being pushy wanting us to dine at their place, even when we came off the beach to go back to our hotel, I know you can experience this in a lot of resorts but I have to say Larnaca was the worse for this
I live here in the west and obviously I much prefer it, but just like any part of the island you need to know where to eat and go, this takes time and unfortunately hard to do in a couple of weeks, but to say the Cypriot are different here to any other part of Cyprus is bluntly nonsense..
regards all
Its a shame about the negative comments made about Paphos. I went last year and enjoyed it. I went to Protaras a few years ago with the family. I liked there in a different way. I do hope it doesn't put people off going. I actually get fed up with us British getting bashed all the time, we are not all bad and I feel that too many people like to call there own as if to be ashamed. There are some who drink to much, and act irresponsibly, but a lot of us don't. I found the Cypriots very friendly towards us, and very obliging when I was in Paphos when I was there on my own, and when I was in Protaras they were lovely with us, using our sayings with a Cypriot accent!
Please don't be put off, its a lovely island.
I can say if you like going to places where the of the tourists are unsmiling, arrogant, barge into you, go on holiday there, , I must say I was in Majorca this year I enjoyed my holiday but I was kept awake by loud mouthed and drunken German tourists, not British.
Regards
Dawnie-Rob
PS It must be lovely to live there, eh Jimbox ?!!!
Yes it IS lovely and would I come back to the UK? have you any wild horses???
We all have differing opinions about what we want or expect from a holiday, it would be daft to take on board one persons opinion and decide never to visit that place, we have to make our own minds up, this is just one opinion which every one is entitled to
Protaras has not as many but good all the same hotels, good restaurants, friendly locals, not as many good bars but the ones without Elvis tend to be better, nice beach.
Pernera has good hotels(Marlita end) and plenty good self catering Apartments, not as many but very good restaurants, a few bars scattered around the area(can't think of an Elvis one)lots of friendly locals and a couple of nice small sandy beaches.
Haven't stayed in Napa but visited, would probably prefer staying around Nissi area, just because it's a wee bit away from it all.
All area's have building work going on(Pernera was particularly more active the last time I was there).
ALL are touristy, because the hundreds of thousands of people who visit are, erm, tourists.
We went to paphos for the first time in 2000 and to be honest my initial reaction was quite negative! I was amazed at how much like the GB it was and that there was a Pizza Hut and Mac Donalds. I remember telling my parents that we would return for the hotel, not the town ------
Since then we have fallen head over heels in love with the place! Ojk, it was not the quiet little fishing village we expected but we love the history, the sites, the people (they are SOOOOOOOOOOOO friendly re us Brits, the History, the Greek culture etc etc etc etc
I suppose Paphos is Paphos and we were guilty of painting a picture in our heads and then complaining if it didn't meet what we thought it would be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its not as built up as many a place and would we return ------------------- already booked for August 2006!
Obviously due to the increase in accommodation available in Paphos now the area is busier, but it has not become more touristy. If that sounds right.
Each time I visit I experience something new and would move there tomorrow if I could. I've already been twice this year and hope to return in September.
I've now started eating in the tavernas the locals use and they couldn't be more friendly. I do agree with an earlier post that some of the bar/restaurant staff may not be Cypriot, they tend to be east european, but that's no different from being back in the UK for some of us.
I love it so much that I set up a business helping people to relocate to the island. One day I'll do it myself.
