without wanting to get into a debate about if smoking in public is right or wrong, i have to say something about your last comment.

In India considering all the other factors such as rubbish, spitting, urination in public, I think smoking is a little fish in a big sea

whilst i do agree that there are lots of other issues which need attention, smoking is more dangerous IMO.
I really cannot see how you can compare smoking with rubbish. Smoking kills.

Yes, but over the course of a 2 week holiday, breathing in other peoples smoke will cause the most damage to my health than any of the above IMO.

I think smokers are trying to think of ways to justify that passive smoking isn't dangerous, when really it is :)
Valleylady - if the terrace was empty, why did they choose to sit near you. I would rather have sat at the opposite end, so that you could still enjoy. Believe it or not, i do not like confrontation, and there have only been a couple of times that i have politely asked a person if they could not smoke. I would never dream of doing so in your situation.

Yes i agree that smokers have the right to indulge, just like people who drink alcohol. But, common sense should apply so as not to cause offence to non smokers.

I really do not think the no smoking in public places law will be enforced in Goa, as it would kill tourism.

YummyMummy -- How much is a charter flight from the Moon ? Im assuming that thats where you live .

Rubbish and Urine are recognised Serious Health Hazards , for obvious reasons , which , when you think about it , will appreciate.
As for Spitting , -- 95% of a "spit" stays airborne , only the heavy bit , hits the deck -- the rest upon ejection from the mouth , disperses over a 5m (approx) radius and floats in the air ( all invisible to the human eye) , if you ever wondered why colds and flus spread so quickly in the UK , well then , thats why -- India is not immune from that Biological Fact , just ask at any Tropical Disease Hospital , they see some of the Fancier types of " colds & flus )

I am an ex smoker and my husband smokes.

I think like most things in life, the vast majority of people are considerate but the few inconsiderate ones are the ones you remember.

If Turkey is anything to go by, they won't enforce it strictly. Certainly in the bars and restaurants we were in last year in Hisaronu no one seemed to care about the smoking rules - in one we were seated under the no smoking sign! Most bars are fairly open anyway - no doors or windows - so it's not much different to sitting outside - I expect Goa is similar.

The original post was asking if it would/could be enforced, when I first read it I knew it would end up with an attack on smokers - lock the thread !!

Spike,

I suspected the same but from a different point of view.

An attack on non smokers.

This thread was always going to go this way.

Agree. Lock it before further carnage.

Well , it seems like it is bad news for smokers , I have just been told that Indeed the Police are enforcing the Law , Corrins Bar was visited on Wed night and fines issued , as was the Eclipse Bar on the Baga Rd ( they have had to form a smokers area out the front ) . No doubt other Bars were raided.
As for Hotels , I have been informed , that their is No Smoking allowed in the Restaurant or Bar ( I dont smoke ) likewise No Smoking at the Pool , or In the Rooms , at my Hotel.
But it does seem that Enforcement is going to happen , these raids are probably just a dry run before the season starts .

To prevent further upset I'll lock this thread as mentioned.

Thanks to all for their input.
