Write to your tour operator, send it recorded delivery, voice your concern.
IF you are unlucky and something does happen you have at least some start point for a claim.

This has happened to me before i booked last minute to go to a property in kavos corfu I got home read the reviews and they were awful along the same lines as your ones with break-ins etc happening regulary.
I went back to the travel agents witht he print outs of the reviews they agreed it was awful and offered to change the accomodation for me i only had to pay £15 pp, turns out i got a nicer property and it was cheaper so they ended up giving me money back. If you ask them they may be able to move you to a different accommodation.

Thanks for that. I havent yet contacted the travel agents as thought they would say they are agents working on behalf of first choice. I will print off reviews and head down to see them.
Im realy miffed as i booked this last Sept and hadnt read any bad reviews until the last 8 wks or so.
Once again many thanks

:D Hi Kat, you should be able to change your accomodation it's usually £20 per person, but they may waive this if you can print off the reviews, as proof.

On a lighter note, we were in the same predicament as you in June, read some not very good reviews, and a few had mentioned they had been burgled, so rang TA up, they said we could change our accomodation (Free of charge), but as it was only a couple of weeks away, the only alternate accomodation was in a different resort, and the reviews for these apartments were actually worse!!!! In the end we decided to stick with what we had originally booked, but to be extra cautious. To cut a long story short, it was one of the best aparthotels we have ever had the pleasure of staying in, and we encountered no problems whatsoever. Good luck with whatever you decide, and have a brilliant holiday. All the best. BBB.

:) Thanks for that.
I am kind of reluctant to change as i know this accommodation is perfect for us in every way except the security issue. When i contacted the resort and first choice they were both saying there is no problem so i guess thats miffed me just as much as what appears to be going on.
If they said yes there have been a few problems but security has been improved i would have felt much better.
I cant do anything today as im at work.
I'll ponder on it and deceide what to do. I havent told hubby as i know thats his worst fear on holiday.
He's realy looking forward to it and if i tell him he will dread going. Maybe if travel agent agree to change us then i could tell him.

I personally would also look into changing apartments or location. The last thing you want is to have to worry about your own personal security whilst on a relaxing holiday.

Please also bear into mind that if you do bring your worries to the attention of the tour operator and they offer you an alternative apartment or hotel and you decline this, you might not be able to make a claim against them if things were to go wrong, as their first line of defence would be to state that they offered you an alternative.

 Hi there
i contacted first choice last week but they said they weren't aware that any of their allocated accomm had been broken into. I rag the travel agent 15 mins ago and they said they would ring 1st choice re changing our accomm. The travel agent has just rang back and said 1st choice are refusing to budge and should we wish to change we will incur cancellation charges of 90%!!!!!!!!!!
I am now furious!
I will buy door alarms and take them with us but i am dreading my annual holiday! And will NEVER book 1st choice again, So much for customer service!!!

Not the kind of response that I expected from First Choice to be honest.

I suggest that you get in writing what you just have been told and keep all correspondence safe. If (and I hope it doesn't) something goes wrong with the security of the apartments I would take this matter further as far as I could. They left themselves open to the highest possible claim you can make. You forewarned them about security problems which they are ignoring.

Have spoken to Ros Fernihough travel law lawyer on your behalf. Here is what she suggests you do.

Write to First Choice stating that you are 'accepting the holiday under duress and are reserving the right to make a claim for compensation on your return' state your reasons for not wanting to go ahead with the holiday.

Take the letter to your Travel Agent (who hopefully aren't First Choice) give them a copy to keep on their file and instruct them to send the original to FC recorded delivery. Keep a copy for yourself also.

If when you get to your accommodation your room shows evidence of a previous break in ie broken locks, damaged safety deposit box go to your rep asap and fill in a complaints form. If there are any other problems with the accommodation also put these on the form. Sign the form and get a copy for yourself.

Ask for a change of accommodation and if they refuse then you are entitled to find accommodation for yourself. Keep the receipts for any charges and phone Ros on return who will assist you in reclaiming your out of pocket expenses.

I would also suggest you print off the booklet written by Ros and available via my signature. Take this with you on holiday as it may prove very useful as to what your rights are.

Hi there
Thanks for that. Ive just got home from work but will do as suggested and send letter to 1st choice.
I cant belive they are still saying there is no problem with accommodation!
Once again many thanks and should there be and updates i will of course let you know x

You'd find that no matter what tour op you were booked with, it would be 90% cancellation charges at this stage becuase its so close to departure. So really, their hands are tied. An operator has a file for every accom they feature. And they keep records of how many complaints they recieve for each one. if it exceeds to many, they pull the property. If its an accom that only recieves a few complaints a year, they leave it. They do investigate things if the complaints they recieve are consistent. I think you'll be ok. Try not to worry too much or you will ruin your holiday. Just keep doors and windows locked, even when your in the room, and you'll be fine. If anything goes wrong, you can take it up with either the hotel manager, rep or police when you are there, whichever gets you the best result.
Have a good holiday. Let us knnow how you get on.

Ive just been down to travel agents and handed in my letter. They are doing all they can to help me and i certainly have no complaints with them, after all they are only agents working on behalf of 1st choice.
I know they would only pull out of an accommodation if they receive enough complaints and they have told me that none of their allocated apts have been broken into within this complex.
Having said that i do think they should look at the bigger picture. Even though its not their clients who have been burgled would you realy expect to have 4 / 5 burglarys in one night as some of the reports suggest!
This is a 4* complex and security and safety should be high up on the agenda along with customer satisfaction. I havent even gone away yet and i know i wont be able to relax. Yeh maybe we might be one of the lucky ones and nothing will happen but if other apts are broken into whist we are there well would you enjoy your holiday?
Anyway as i say i have taken 2 copies of letter to T A this morning, one for them and one for 1st choice. I also have a copy.
Wasnt even home when T A rang and said she had contacted 1st choice again by telephone to say they were faxing through my letter, 1st choice response was they will file the letter until after my holls as i have no reason for complaint.
Yes i see their point but surely as i say they should be looking at the bigger picture here.
So much for the customer always being right!
Once again if anything else develops i will let you all know and again thanks for all of your advice. Its a great little community going here x

You are aware of the situation that may be happening at your accommodation. Because of the report regarding the police maybe the apartment managers have stepped up security. The latest report sounds more promising than some of the previous posts.

Now it's time for you to relax and get ready to enjoy your holiday. Although I think it's good to be forewarned for any potential problems I do also worry about people who are made to feel stressed when they read of such problems before they travel.

You have now done all you possibly can. You may be more vigilant on your holiday than had you not read the reports which may not be a bad thing. So please put it behind you now and try to relax and look forward to your holiday. 8)
