Now although we go to Goa regularly, and have done for 15 years or so, staying in Candolim, Calangute, Baga and Arpora, we always hire a scooter and go to Vagator, Anjuna or the northern beaches, unless we fancy a day around Petes shacks in Candolim. We are beach lovers.
In February, we are staying in the Nazri in Baga and with us will be my older sister and her hubby. They have only been to Goa once before, that was with us, last March, staying at the Santana Hotel in Candolim. They like the beach, but only for a couple of hours or so and tend to like wandering around and/or using the hotel pool areas, which was ideal at the Santana as it is right by the beach.
I want them to have a better experience of Goa this time, but don't know much about the shacks in Baga.
Which are the best for food, atmosphere, friendly staff and evening entertainment?
We will have to curtail our swanning off alone, to make this a good holiday for them. We don't want them to have to get taxi's to join us everywhere, so we will have to try to make the most of it in Baga. Now, I know and use, all the nice restaurants/ shops/bars, for evening meals in Baga, but apart from that where is there to go that is not dominated by younger, domestic tourists, jet ski's etc? In other words, not too manic.
It's an alternative to the much crowded Baga beach area.A taxi to Anjuna will only cost a small amount if you split it 4 ways too !
For a special meal try the new Sublime in Saligoa. Stunning surrounds for an excellent meal. Watch out though, it closes Wednesdays.
Have fun
cheers
Dave
We will try Sublime if we can find it. We did go to Florentines in Saligao in November. Excellent food and value for money, but not keen on the actual restaurant. It was more like a works canteen, high formica tables, and not somewhere you'd want to sit and spend an evening in. Very busy though. They were queuing at the entrance by 9pm.
Sublime is a tribute to good taste and decor !
Last year we met people from where we live who took us down to Baga beach.
Now we had a great day but I have to be honest I was not that impressed with how busy the beach was.
I digress,We keep meaning to have an evening or two in the Baga area but never seem to get round to it.
This year I am determined to get down to Baga a few nights and will look to the forum for tips.
Papa
We prefer the beach area from TGI Friday up Bottle Bay near the Nazri
TGI had to move last season and is now harder to find but is a great small shack with a good menu and not expensive, from the end of CSM road it is about five or six shacks on the left
Big Banana has a nice atmosphere, uncle is a great character and their Chateaubriand is to die for and the steak burgers pretty good as well
The biggest and one of the most popular shacks is Boscos and we used to go there a lot but thought he has got a bit expensive last season and now use his brother place, Xaviers a few shacks away
There is a whole load of shacks at the end of Tito's lane that we have used over the years and thought were petty good but TGI used to be in that area and once we found TGI we stopped using the others
We have been to a couple of wedding receptions at Bottle Bank which were brilliant but not tried it in the day as the shacks there are a long way back from the sea
Down by the river is OK in the week but can get much to busy with domestic tourists at the weekends but some good shacks there are Shining Star, Squeeze, Oceanic and St Anthony's
Fire and Ice also Lazydays are good places to eat in the evening in CSM road that you might not have tried also have look in the Phoenix bar at Captain Lobo's Hideaway
There is a new restaurant just before Mackies Market at Baga creek that was excellent when we went there with freinds for our last night, have forgotten the name but will be using it again if they let us back into Goa next week
Deb
We ate at RASA's 3 or 4 times and I would rate it as good but like so many places, inconsistant. I had the tandoori lamb one night and it was excellent, a repeat sampling was pretty awful with it not being cooked properly. I don't mind pink lamb but the tandoori coating was horrible. Should have sent it back but didn't. We didn't go back after that either !
That sounds like it and I remember they did quite a few lamb (can't believe its not goat) dishes
Hi Dave
Sorry to hear you had a dodgy meal, as you say you should have sent it back and asked for something else but I can understand how you felt, sometimes when things go wrong you just want to get out of a place as fast as possible and can't handle all the mucking about
One of our party ordered a plain lamb steak and it came covered in a very thick spicy sauce. It was sent back and they were asked if they wanted a new steak or just have the sauce taken off.
They went for the new plain lamb steak option and it was replaced very quickly but had to have the sauce served up in a gravy boat, it seems it was easier to ask the chef to serve the sauce separate, then have it with no sauce, could have been a sketch from Monty Python but the all our food was very good and not expensive
Nishas on Tito's road is one of our favourites - had some tremendous meals in there over the years
Does anyone know which shacks are good at night for entertainment as well as in the day? Please not Britto's as we went there in November for our last meal, and didn't like it.
We have been using the Squeeze shack for the last 7 years and will be back there again next month, everyone great (staff and guests) food is lovely and they can't do enough for you, they also have security to keep the unwanted away and watch your bags etc., not sure about entertainment at night as we usually go walking round and try different restaurants most nights. It's the second one in from the river.
Oceanic also fantastic, cant fault the staff there either, always been fantastic with us.
thanks
monday nights the shining star has a barbeque, with entertainment
Oceanic and Squeeze shacks are down by the Baga river mouth and Shinning Star is next door to the Oceanic
Squeeze shack is 2nd in from the river.
just before baga bridge you have bistro shack, very cheap and cheerful, lovely staff, meeting place of brits and wonderful beach bbq on tuesdays (try the shark). st anthonys of course a bit further on famouse, and brittos..myself i love bistro, comfy seats on the beach good food and atmosphere.
Thanks for all these tips. I'm sure we will find them all nice. I wonder if they are going to try to charge for use of the sunbeds this season, even when you eat and drink at the shack?
If they chaege for beds move on
