We arrive in Goa Saturday evening and heard the Baga night time market is suppose to be really good. Just wondering does anyone know what time it starts / closes? As we'd like to hit it on arrival as long as no plane delays!
Also what is the haggling etiquette? How far down is reasonable to haggle for goods? Should we haggle silly prices so that they meet us half way? Or do they just agree on a price that we say? I go round car boot sales so am use to haggling here just not in goa lol!! Advise please!!:D

It all depends on the item on how much you can go down from. Something may start at 1000rs and you could go as low as 200-250rs maybe even lower... I haggle with a smile on my face. its fine to be a bit cheeky and don't be afraid to walk away. Chances are you'll find the item else where and the seller usually chases after you and drops to your price. Just be polite and have fun.

I think you mean Ingo Saturday Night Market which is at Arpora not Baga, this is now open as I was there a few weeks ago and thought it was excellent. They have dozens & dozens of stalls, 3 or 4 live bands, numerous bars and a great selection of different foods. I'm not sure about the opening times but it is probably something like 7pm until 2am. It does get very busy so it's probably advisable to get there earlyish as it gets difficult to get parked.
As for haggling, I usually offer around a third of the price they say and often agree at around half the price or less. A good idea is to leave your buying until near the end of the night as they are more willing to accept any price offered by then.

The only markets I know of in Baga are the tibetan ones. There nice and sell some good silver rings etc.

I don't know how you would ever find your scooter again with the number that are parked there.
It is also a good idea to leave before the end as I can't imagine what it will be like with all that traffice leaving at the same time.

Ah I had the bright idea of tying a piece of red ribbon around one of the handles. Off topic but.. a good tip non the lest. Don't use red though, that's my colour 
Ingo's opens at 4-30pm a lot of the stalls are still setting up and the food dos'nt get going till around 6-00pm. But it's a good idea to get there early to avoid the traffic jams and parking problems, well worth a visit for the entertainment and food.
we're staying in Baga (beira mar hotel) so guess we dont have far to go (but our 1st time so no idea how big Baga is lol!) to worry about parking and traffic problems

Good tip on waiting til nearer the end of the night to get real bargains - we're staying 10 nights so can always go back the 2nd week and have another go if we miss anything i guess

sorry, i've just re-read the post - am a bit confused - is it Baga market or Inga that has shut down? Where is Inga market in Arpora if this is open?
There is not a Baga market, I'm sure the market you are referring to is the Saturday night market called Ingo which is at Arpora (not far from Baga) any taxi driver will get you there for around 400Rs return, and it is definately open again. 
You have two markets on a Saturday, Ingos and Mackies, both in Arpora but a couple of miles apart. Ingos is by far the bigger of the two, but both are very lively, with music and great food.

the saturday night market at arpora is called mackies it is next to the marinha dourada hotel ingos market was shut down when we were there in november
Ingo market definately open now I was there on 22nd December, seemingly it had opened the week before.
Does anyone know roughly how long it would take to walk from Baga to the market in Arpora? I'm just thinking it might be quicker if theres a lot of traffic going there 
We're keen walkers so dont mind a bit of a trek 
Also i hadnt thought of buying food there, but noticed it mentioned on this post - do you mean takeaway food? if so is it safe? I've heard so many stories about being careful about what you eat im a bit dubious about buying from a market, but can imagine it could look really delicious

I would imagine walking would take around 45 mins to an hour but I would not advise it on these roads. A taxi will get you there or almost there in 10-15mins.
The food there is superb you can get Indian, Chinese, Italian, Thai, Tibetan, German sausages and even a German bakery, give it a try I'm sure you'll be ok.

Agree with all the other posts... we were also told about being careful with the food, but most of them cook infront of you so you can be the judge of what you think is good or not - to be honest most of the food looks so good the hardest decision you will have is which stall to eat from!

As for the food, personally I wouldn't touch the food at most of the market stalls. A lot of it was covered in flies. Have a good look before you buy ! The best food stall is just outside the gates of the market. It usually runs out about the time the market opens and is aimed at stall holders and taxi drivers.The turnover is fast so everything is piping hot, straight out of the frying pan onto your plate without touching anyone's hands. Superb.
As for haggling, I got some superb bargains and there is no need to wait until the end of the night either. Most traders are happy to sell provided they are making a profit.

Depends which end of baga you are. If your the river end it wont take as long but ether way its a fir treck! Maybe get a taxi 3/4's of the way there. Traffic is bad.
Can anyone advise if the Mackies Saturday night market is open now? We were staying at the Marinha Dourada in December, and neither Ingos nor Mackies were open. We are going back in March, and normally pop into Mackies as it is so handy.
