I've been patiently reading all these posts for the last few days and I am definitely in the 'have difficulty in keeping to the baggage limits' group. However I have managed to do so on my last two trips. I just chuck out some of my husband's stuff as he always moans about the amount of baggage we have.
Anyway, what really annoys me more than anything is the check in palava, when you are a couple of kgs over and you are charged for it. The sooner we are given a total weight per passenger the better - i.e we get on the scales as well. I don't go along with this fuel thing as how can an airline tell how heavy the passengers will be.
What about that fellow last week, told he was alright to travel then told he could'nt it was a weight thing he was 29 stone add on his luggage allowance it would come to at least twice the fare by your reckoning.
I don't go along with this fuel thing as how can an airline tell how heavy the passengers will be.
Exactly, my sentiments as well.
Plus the more weight on board the aircraft then more fuel is required....I think More fuel.......increased prices for tickets......etc.
So then, the LESS weight on board, the less fuel is required .....I think Less fuel......decreased prices for tickets.......etc. I don't think so.
The next time I travel on a flight half full/empty, then maybe they will give me some cash back on all the fuel they have saved.

why take tons of suntan stuff/toiletries ect. just buy them in the resort and throw them away before you return.
I don't go along with this fuel thing as how can an airline tell how heavy the passengers will be.
They don't know how heavy the passengers will be, but they can calculate a rough idea.
294 passengers. half weighing 10 stones, half weighing 20 stones (sorry my brain is not in kilos tonight) this will give an average combined weight to calculate, but they can calculate reasonably exact 294 passengers with 20 kgs suitcases.
Children who weigh less than a 20 stone man sat next to him/her will also "even" out the weight.
You might have less in your suitcase, but the person who has 30 kgs will stabilized the total weight calculcated.
25 kgs allowance (giving 5 kgs extra,) works out at 1470 kgs more.

Lots of woman have their favourite brand of cosmetics, toiletries etc that are not available everywhere. After an up to twelve hour flight the last thing I want to be doing on arrival is finding a shop that sells the toiletries that I use. I want to relax in a bath or shower, and then use my favourite body lotion.
if he needs something when he gets there that he has not packed he goes out and buys it.
Maybe not an affordable option if there's a family of 4 or 5 of you
BenidormHereICome.......we got your point and feelings the first time..with links... thanks But I think your missing the point. You can go up to 32kg anyway IF you pay the excess charge so they can afford to carry the extra weight.......and please don't say the charges pay for the fuel as that's ridiculous when you compare the charges against the fuel charges.
This post started out in part as to whether allowances should be different depending on how long your duration on holiday was. The current restrictions on hand luggage I've no doubt will be relaxed slightly at some point......but the restrictions haven't affected the hold baggage allowance regardless.

No, I do not believe I am with all due respect. The "point" I was trying to make was the Health and Safety of the Baggage Handlers, something many travellers tend to overlook.
People come in all sort of shapes and sizes. Previous discussions on this particular topic have been locked before following complaints from members.
I'm sure there won't be a need for that on this occasion

My point was i would usually take say 3kg in hand baggage and now i cant as these items are no longer allowed on board. Therefore that extra weight will be in our case and as i would have been taking it on board anyway i think they should allow an extra few kg per person to reflect the hand baggage restrictions.
Also as pointed out earlier i have within the past few years had 25kg which again as i have pointed out has now been reduced to 20kg which for a family of four is a diff of 20kg
I do tend to agree with earlier posts that this is of course a great way for them to make exra money via the excess baggage fee' s.
In 13 days we are flying out to Cyprus for a family wedding and the outfits again all with shoes bags etc etc will only be worn once on that holiday.
Its not practical to assume the everything can be mix and match.
The shoes the four of us are wearing for the wedding are not shoes we would wear on holiday so theres four pairs of shoes for a start.
My hubby is wearing suit complete with long sleeved shirt, waistcoat, cravat, formal shoes etc etc
I am wearing a outfit which would be dressy even for me to wear on a evening. My shoes and bag match my outfit but nothing else i will be taking ( not that i would want to wear them again in the same holl )
Both of our children are used to wearing diff things every night ( my daughter is 13 and very concious as are most teenagers of what she wears she would be gobsmacked if i said she had to wear things more than once in a two wk period )
Im not going to keep going over old ground but we are taking four complete outfits which with shoes etc must weigh a fair weight and they are things we COULDNT wear again on that holiday x

The above mentioned link gives different weight allowances per piece of baggage depending on the class of flight.

Could you not phone the airline and grovel a bit
Explain that you are attending a wedding, even go as far as saying your kids a bridesmaids/page boys, and you and your husband are getting married - you know blag a bit I know we have attended weddings abroad where the bride and groom have been allowed to take their wedding outfits as excess baggage free of charge, as like you say they are not going to wear these outfits again while on holiday.
You might be lucky and get away with it or they might even agree a reduced fee for excess baggage.
Give it a go - you've got nothing to lose.

Ive just emailed both the airport and the tour op.
To be honest its more the bride i feel for ( my sis in law ) She was told when she booked she would be able to take her dress on as hand luggage and now the ristrictions indicate she cant.... Shes gutted.
When i emailed the tour op i did mention that usually i take a vanity case as hand baggage and although im not taking more than usual that the case will weigh more due to the vanity items going in the case and have asked that as a gesture of goodwill that maybe they could allow an exra few kg per person
Your right it may be cheeky to try and blag it but its worth the 5 mis it took to send the emails.
Naturally i will let you all know if hear anything back from either the airport or the tour op x
all i can say is if the temps keep up hubby is going to be far too hot in a 3 pc. suit and all the gear.. i would normally recommend lightweight black trousers ,thin shirt tie{if you must and a thin but dressy waistcoat..
have you read through the Cyprus wedding topic? that will give you some idea.
Just had a thought , and I know someone will correct me if I am wrong - are you not allowed to take liquids on board flights other than to the USA now . I thought you could take what you normally would providing it fits into a bag that is of a certain dimmension. You should still be allowed your 5kg hand luggage provided it all fits into the one bag. Mind you wouldn't fancy tasting shampoo
Wizard - It is not that simple - If the bride wants the men in her family to wear the same suits/cravats etc they have probably hired/bought them here to take with them. Don't you know that what a bride wants a bride gets
Rgds Jackie
that may be the case but on my travels i have seen the effect of heat/humidity on people in full dress at such functions, these things should have been taken into consideration when planning such events,
wizard
Wizard I agree the men will be to hot but i did not pick their outfits, nor did they it was as Jackie says the brides choice. She has chosen long sleeves as one of the men in the wedding party has a scar on his arm which he is concious of showing up in the wedding photos.
Yes there is a two tier system on practically all airlines for weight limit. Most business/first passengers are allowed to to take the upper (32KG) limit for free whereas economy passengers have to pay excess baggage rates if they want to take the upper limit. Fair enough the average business fare is more than double the price of the economy ticket and first class fares are astronomical, these passengers have paid for the extra weight allowed.
Could there not be a total weight allowance on the plane and as each person/family checks in bags the weight gets readjusted? Do people have to pay in cash at the time they check in when overweight? Would anyone who has had to do this be prepared to wait until everyone has checked in to see if the plane is within the required weight and therefore you wouldn't have to be charged?
I don't suppose that's very feasible but if someone was Waaay over (like a Japanese colleague of mine who filled a case full of heinz baked beans to take back and was told it was going to cost him £400 in excess - he left them behind).
