Probably cheaper to book direct -- but if you have any delays then you are on your own, if you book through a travel agent then there will be a rep at or around the resort

With have been twice to Maldives and on both occasion we have had a 24 hour flight delay - if you went DIY then you would have to pay extra to stay on the island an extra day, Our rep sorted it out both times for us so in 1 way it was much safer to book through an agent

I've just received the rate sheet direct from the resort and it looks way cheaper to book a package and also get the benefits you mentioned.
