Mark - wow!!!!
That took some getting together, what a great informative FAQ. Tells new visitors to Barbados absolutely everything they need to know, wish someone had this for us to read when we first visited back in 97.
Anyone thinking of visiting Barbados - download this from Mark - it is great.
Congrats. Mark

Many thanks for the positive replies.
I will update the FAQ as and when I receive new information, and after my next visit to this lovely island.

Great Site
Site doesn't work with firefox, just to let you know!
Cheers for the heads up.
Great site with lots of useful need to know info.
Thanks for the compliment
Site has now been updated so those interested can read the Barbados information on line, rather than download it.
Mark
Thanks for the info as I am planning my next trip.
mark, great faq. i live here and found your info to be quite accurate. keeo checking about the departure tax...there have been some articles in papers that suggest they may be looking to increase the rate. also, can't remember but did you mention that only persons 12yr and older have to pay it?
Unfortunately my boss won't let me have more holidays per year so I am restricted to travel to Barbados only once a year.
I do try to keep up to date by reading the Nation News paper online each day and as soon as I find information I will update the FAQ.
Not too sure about kiddies not paying any departure tax as we have never travelled with children to Barbados. Anybody knowing whether this is the case, please advise me and I'll update accordingly.

Hubby and I are toying with trying Barbados some time - to be honest hubby has already been (!!!!!) and we'd have to save ------
I like to do lots of 'research' re where we go and I'm alittle worried that we would probably have to go in August (!) Am not too sure re the weather situation! Have been told that Barbados doesn't really suffer too much with hurricanes (not like Mexico etc) but it worries me --------
Also, do we need to take any medication for mozzies for Barbados - hubby didn't last time he went ('89) but things may have changed.
We already have our hearts set on Cyprus (again) next year but in the meantime I'm dreaming, planning and researching!
Cheers
Am not too sure re the weather situation! Have been told that Barbados doesn't really suffer too much with hurricanes (not like Mexico etc) but it worries me --------
Although Barbados hasn't had a direct hit by a hurricane for over 25 years, please remember that the actions of mother nature can not be predicted. Barbados does lie, however, outside of the hurricane belt.
Also, do we need to take any medication for mozzies for Barbados
I personally never get bit by mozzies, my other half does though however. There don't appear to be that many mozzies compared to St. Lucia and other islands though.
I'm sure you going to love Barbados

Know what you mean re the weather ------- its one of those - "It doesn't happen often, but you have been warned!" situations! The last time hubby went he said that it did rain but he just had a swim when it was raining and then everything dried out really quickly!
Re the mozzies ----- am happy to use mozzie repellant etc etc but do we need any jabs / tablets as if we were going to Egypt? (Does this make sense???)
Must admit - I simply love the sea ---- give me a beautiful beach, the sea and some palm trees and I'm in heaven ------------ the hotel we go to in Pafos has these but hubby keeps telling me that its not quite the same!!!!I'm also a rum fan ---------- where else on earth can be so much like heaven for me!
Out of interest - where do you stay in Barbados ----------- love a rough sea so would be happy with the 'wilder' side if need be!
Thanks again --- off to check the rest of the site ------
We stayed both on the south of the island (sea is more choppier) and west (sea is more smoother).

I used to live in Barbados and is my favourite place on Earth
You don't need vaccinations to go there, just make sure your normal ones are up to date.
Yes, there are mozzies there (they LOVED me) but they don't carry any nasties so you don't have to worry about horrendous diseases. They tend to be in the north of the island or wherever there is a swap (There is actually swapland near St. Lawrence Gap which most tourists don't know about)
One word of warning. Don't go swimming in the Atlantic Ocean on the East Coast. You can find the evil Portuguese Man-O-War in there-a jelly fish with a sting that whips around the nearest limb and has such a nasty sting it can result in death (if not treated in time) or the amputation of the limb! Also the Atlantic has strong under currents that can carry you away or straight into those pretty looking rocks. The East Coast is stunning, but best appreciated from the shore.
The South is the best for watersports such as windsurfing and jet skis etc.
The Jolly Roger is great fun, but if you don't want to be completely surrounded by tourists ask if there are any "local days" coming up. They usually let tourists on anyway to make the numbers up.
If you want to see a beautiful beach I would recommend Paynes Bay on the West Coast. The locals beach is Bath beach. Tourists tend to stay away from it because you have to walk through a small wooded area to get to and they think it's going to be shaded from the sun, but it's not.
The "rainy season" runs from May to October. When it rains it rains!!! September seems to be the worst month for rain. But, as other's have said once it stops raining everything dries out in no time.
St. Lawrence Gap is great for nightlife, esp The Ship which has a mixture of locals and tourists. Age doesn't matter-everyone fits in as long as they want to have a good time.
If you want a real Bajan night out visit a rum shop (the one's in the south tend to be more tourist friendly) It's super cheap and you can watch the most violent games of dominos
If you want to avoid being ripped off during a night out stay away from Sandy Lane! Another point on Sandy Lane, they claim to have a private beach. No beach is private in Barbados. They can make it hard for you to use, but it's not their beach!
If anyone's thinking whether or not it's worth it I would say DO IT!!! It's just fantastic
Went to the gorgeous island of Barbados in April this year, and agree with Cinnamon - Barbados is a great place. Know what you mean about the east coast - went to Bathsheba whic is fabulous - Great scenery but wouldn't want to swim there.
The past couple of weeks I have been checking the weather, and for the past 2-3 weeks, everyday has just been a cloud with rain.
I was expecting a holiday in the sun for 2 weeks. Is it still sunny? Will we get a tan?
Please help, my girlfriend is worrying about it more than me.
Thanks in advance.

Also I read in a little Barbados book, that you are only allowed to wear shorts, vests etc on the beach.? Is this true?
Just to let you know one of our Barbados experts is currently on his hols (in Egypt!) but should be back in the next few days when I'm sure he'll be able to answer your questions if nobody else has been able to help
Pippy
Thank you Pippy for the reply.
Was in Barbados last March and bikinis and speedos everywhere NO topless allowed on the beach( women that is). What you have to check on the weather is it may be cloudy but dont be fooled you will burn and badly if you dont use high sun screen.Check weatherunderground it will give the weather for the whole day sometimes it rains for 15mins but in that time it rains !!!!.
