Laganas beach is quite broad, the sand is packed hard at the main resort end, getting better going east toward Kalamaki.

Are all the beaches in Zante like this? I am going to Alykanas next summer

I think kalamaki and lagana are the worst as due to the turtles they cant disturb the sand- shame tourists who smoke didnt think the same (we smoke but take a water bottle/can for an ashtray) we ended up buying a kids rake and doing the sand before we sat down, funny enough the next day we went that spot was always taken as it was clean  :D

tsilivi is the blue flag beach and beautiful and vasillicos (sp) is lovely too, sorry cant help you with yours, but alikes and alikanes did look lovely from the boat :D i am sure you will have a fab time :D

Hi

I have worked for 2 summers in zante, there are some gorgeous beaches on the island, sadly laganas and argassi or not that good, argassi beach is very narrow, to be honest not really much of a beach, As said before Laganas beach is like one giant ashtry. Kalamaki beach is better, the sea is very shallow for quite a way out,but again people leave their rubbish and fag ends on it. The nicest beaches i have been to are in the vassillikos area, There is relax beach,St Nicolas beach, gereakas beach to name a few. These are some of the nicest beaches i have ever been to. Also on relax and st Nicks beach there are watersports availible as well, they are not allowed in Laganas and Kalamaki due to the turtles.

Zante is a brilliant to place to visit, im sure you will have a wonderful time.

If you go to the section of the beach which is just across the bridged ditch (towards Kalamaki) this stretch of beach outside the Louis Zante hotel isn't used as a road. The part where the old guy has the sunbeds is also raked clean everyday, so no fag ends (he also provides ashtrays)

Hi lisaeugene :wave
That's the same place we used when we went to Laganas beach.. i swam with quite a few turtles last year from here and even in May there was lovely warm currents in the sea.

The beach sweeps right round from Sostis islet to the old fort at Kalamaki although at some points it is used as a road with a drop off and turning point for coaches and delivery lorries along a small length of beach between Laganas main street and Aghios Sostis. And again just by Aghios sostis it is very rocky. A few years back there was a wooden footbridge over all the rocks and this was needed to walk between Laganas and Aghios sostis but the beach has built up at this point and you can now walk along the sand.

Last year there was a heavy storm just days before we arrived in Laganas and the sea was very high and there wasn't much beach at some points with the storm surge in the Ionian sea but, it all got back to normal after a couple of days.

If you want a lovely day out on a beautiful beach you can't go wrong with hiring a motor boat and going out to Marithionnisi island out in the Laganas bay. Sandy beach facing Laganas with a long sand bar coming out from the island and the sea is shallow for some way out here.
And round the back of the island there is a sun trap of a beach with high white cliffs and its got a white pebbly beach very hot around mid day.

The beach at Alykanas is acually quite pleasant...gently slopes into the sea so is good for kids. We went around Zante in our hire car and did not find too many beaches that we felt were any better.

Well that is good news to hear. We are off to Alykanas next july and there is nothing worse than a tip for a beach. :(

I love the sound of seeing or even swiming with turtles, do you take a boat trip to see them.

We were in Alykanas in 2002 and the beach was narrow but very clean, lovely white sand very easy to walk along. We are going back next June/July for two weeks next year and we never usually go back to the same place. It was wonderful. Hope it hasnt changed in the last couple of years. :D

If you do hire a car its well worth driving down to the Vasilikos coast. The beachs there are lovely. We usually head to St. Nicolas beach. We have never found the beach dirty, the water is crystal clear, there is a small taverna for food and drinks, watersports at one end if you want them. There are many beaches along this coast worth a look.

If you want peace and quiet, stunning scenery, warm sea and golden sand then Dafni beach in the Vassilikos area is the place to go. Although the drive down to it is a bit hairy it is most definitely worth it! The sea there is so warm and the beach is gorgeous - we were there in July and it was really quiet, a complete contrast to the noisy packed Gerakas we'd just left!!

Dafni beach is lovely. I lived in Zante for about 4 years and I can recommend it.

There are also some nice beaches around Alikes/Alikanas that are out of the way and private. Ask some of the locals, or expats that live there.

Pop into Lupper's Bar on the Laganas to Kalamaki Road (just as you're leaving Laganas) and speak to Richard & Kirsty who now own it. I've not seen 'em for a few years, but I understand they took the bar over at the beginning of last season.

Richard has lived in Zante for about 10 years now, and knows an AWFUL lot about the best secluded beaches.
