You were a bit put out but the chair totally put your hubby out
Pity it wasn't in America or in England you could have threatened to sue them. like everybody seems to now when things go wrong.
On the morning of our departure, I discovered my Grandson's bag had been badly ripped, and I couldn't pack away his things for the journey home. I decided I would stack everything ready, give the room a good clean, and walk into Alvor, have breakfast, and buy him a new bag, which we did.
However, on our return, I was pounced on by the hotel receptionist, and asked "where the hell" we had been.
Rather taken aback by her attitude, I explained what had happened with the bag, and that we'd been to buy a new one, and have breakfast."Not that it's any of your business" I added.
"You're 5 minutes late departing" she informed me, "and you will have to pay 20 euro's because someone specifically booked your room, and we've had to put them in room 1010 next door, and they are very unhappy to be given a different room to room 1012 that they specifically asked for."
"So you don't clean your rooms and prepare clean beds before new guests arrive then"? I asked. "Of course we do" she replied.
"That's odd, I was due out at 10am, but arrived back at 5 past, and you've already placed someone in a room that should have been occupied by them at 10am, In my reckoning that leaves absolutely no time between clients, for cleaning"? I said rather puzzled.
"The fact is, you are late checking out, and we've had to re-locate new guests so you will have to pay for an extra half a day, otherwise hotel management and police will be called" she grunted at me.
Bearing in mind it was mid October, and the hotel was 3 quarters empty anyway, and there were at least 50 vacant rooms, I found it rather unbelievable that someone specifically booked room 1012, the very room we were vacating, but I paid up anyway and finished packing, before handing back the key, and as our airport transfer wasn't due till 3-30pm, we decided to spend the rest of the day by the hotel pool.
At around 1-30pm, a new couple with a baby got out of a transfer coach and checked into the hotel. About half an hour later they came down to the pool, and as we were the only people around the pool at the time, we got chatting to them. I asked them what room they had been allocated.
They had been placed in room 1010, and I asked them if they had specifically asked for room 1012, as the receptionist had informed me that they had, and had been very angry with us, as we were late checking out, and had to be given an alternative room. They were shocked that they had been involved in the blatant lie, and we all went indoors to have it out with the receptionist, who was a little flustered and embarrassed to be caught in a lie.
I was asked to get my Grandson dressed, and to leave the premises as my time at the hotel had now expired, and that I no longer had the right to be on the premisses.
"Oh but I've paid 20 euro's for an extra half a day because I was 5 minutes late checking out........Remember?", I informed her.
"I think that gives me the right to be here till 6pm, Or shall I call the hotel manager and the police to sort the problem out"? I dryly replied.
The day before we was due home we was in another families apartment when there 18 month old son put his hand on the glass of the balcony door ( he litreally just placed his hand on the glass), the next thing the glass had all shattered on this poor boys hand. As soon as we told the reception the glass was replaced withen minutes. Whilst the glass was been replaced we went and got some food, and on the way popped into Thomson to let them know what had happened.
We went back to the apartments with a Thomson rep as they wanted to check it had been replaced properly, when the couple walked up the stairs one of the staff run out with a bill for them for 60tl and refused to give them the room key unless they paid it. They refused saying it was obviously unsafe before they arrived etc. The owner was calling us all liars, saying the little boy could not have done it and that one of us had done it.
Anyway after loads of commotion Thomson ended up paying the bill so they could get back into their room.
it wasent out first time in turkey weve been going since 1995 and never came across anything like it
just glad the little boy wasent badly hurt
wonder if hubby would have been hurt and i would have handed them the hospital bill
We thought the Olu-Deniz area very pretty, but we won't go back to Turkey again
we got ripped off far too many times.
Just shows how different people's views can be - personally I've never felt ripped off in Turkey, whereas don't even get me started about being ripped off in the likes of Spain or the Canaries! Talk about money mad...
I don't see how with a haggling system you can ever feel anything but 'ripped off' after all you never know what the true price is. People just charge what they think they can 'get away with' and laugh behind your back when they know they have managed to c o n you. Every message board you go on mentions the same thing about Turkey and the potential to be ripped off and to watch out for it, I think its naive and misleading to say it is otherwise. Its best to be upfront about it and let people know and then you dont get a lot of first time visitors taking the hump and never going back. Best if they know what they are getting in to.

I'm not suggesting that rip-offs don't happen in Turkey - all I'm saying is that I personally have never felt that I've been ripped off, and as a canny Scot, I quite enjoy all the haggling. Indeed, my other half haggles no matter where we go - even in this country! If I haggle and feel I'm getting good value, then I'm happy - if not, I walk away!
I'm sure there are people laughing behind you back at buying overpriced goods in every country too, whether you are haggling or not. You never know the true vaule of an item anywhere really and I personally will only ever buy something if I think it is worth the price.
Exactly, Kedi - if the price is good value as far as you are concerned, surely that's what matters?
Make a decision on what you are happy to pay, and I don't see how that can be ripping you off. If you don't like the price, walk away.
and were added to the bill at the end of the holiday.
We were amongst many who were charged for items we knew we didn't consume, including alcoholic drinks including vodka. I've never touched vodka in my life, and never will, but it was their word against ours, every time.
If that's not being "ripped off" I don't know what is!
The fact of the matter is, we didn't like Turkey, we didn't like the pestering, we didn't like the people,we had our 'fingers burned' and we don't ever plan on returning.................... End of!!!
I personally wouldn't spend a holiday ordering food and drink I couldn't pay for as I went along -definitely scope for being ripped off with that system in any country I think, not just Turkey. Far too difficult to keep a track of things.
Was my first time in Turkey and I loved all the haggling, if i was not happy with the price I walked away...9 times out of 10 they run after you accepting the price that you offered
The only place we were overcharged was in the big Migros store near the water park.
The cashier couldnt get one over on my husband and he just held out his hand and asked for the rest of his change where she just handed him the money and said sorry.
People had drinks added to their bill in Deniz Kapasi where there was an ICR meet up.
As we were warned about it we made sure we only paid for what we had.
About 4 years ago we went to a restaurant in Hisaronu, that supposedly specialised in seafood, after the owner (a Turkish woman) gently hassled us in. As I love seafood, anyway, we thought we'd give it a try, especially as she'd advertised on a board outside: "Large Fresh Crab - caught today!" which is one of my favourites.
We sat down inside and ordered our meals, and when the waiter served us our crab I noticed it looked overly-garnished, but didn't take much notice of that. It was only when I took some of the meat out of the shell after discarding the mayonnaise, that I realised it didn't really resemble crab meat. As soon as I put it in my mouth I KNEW it was not crab. It didn't taste anything like crab! I looked again, and as I examined the meat I realised it was shredded breast of chicken.
We called the waiter, who called the owner, and she immediately became defensive and started raising her voice, saying it was most certainly crab! I wasn't having it - I KNEW it wasn't crab - and an argument broke out. Other customers turned to look (they all seemed unhappy with their food too) and she told me in very haughty tones that they were the best fish restaurant in the whole of Fethiye, and they specialised in crab - and that I didn't know what I was talking about. So I asked her how many crabs she had in the kitchen, and she said 'at least 20' so I asked her to bring some out for me to look at. She marched off in a huff, and we waited for ages...................no sign of her.......called another waiter and again asked to see the other crabs.........then after about 5 minutes she sent a young embarrassed-looking waiter out holding a large silver tray with 6 cooked crabs placed neatly on it, shell-side up. I could tell by the waiter's face he wanted to squirm when I stood up and turned each crab over - and there sat 6 EMPTY crab shells!
Of course, we refused to pay for our meal, and stood up to leave while she came over cursing at us in Turkish! Had it of not been so outrageous it could have been funny. It just bothered me to think that some people were paying a heck of a lot of money for so-called 'fresh live crab' and getting shredded chicken and mayonnasie stuffed inside a crab shell - a crab shell that probably 50 people before them had eaten out of!

I wont return to anywhere that rips us off ! Nor will I give them good feedback, I agree mistakes happen but this was at least 2 mistakes and he was rude and obnoxious!
This year I am gutted by the way we was ripped off in Icmeler and Marmaris,we went in June,no problem, then we went back in September,Ive lost count of the places that tried to charge us for extra drinks we hadnt had,and it was only 2 of us,not a crowd,Three Bells,Magestic,Travellers rest in Icmeler and Tansas short changing us,just to name a few,and a couple of restaurants in Marmaris that we have had no problems with in the past,we had already booked again for next year, and if it happens again 2011 will be our last time
