Magic Bus On The Hippie Trail from Istanbul to India
by Rory Maclean
Havent read it myself so would be happy to hear from anyone who has.

Thanks Bagaddict I`m there myself next week, I will track it down with my extra sensory powers
Feelthevibe if I was you id buy lots of copies and sell them on Ebay, it seems her book is quite rare,if not expensive, over here. Id buy a copy from you
NO feelthevibe please sell to your friends on the forum!!!
The author lived in India in the 80's (i think), in the book she gives an account of what it's like to be a woman in India. It's a non fiction book and it gives an insight into female infanticide, arranged marriages, sati and bride burning as well as other subjects.
I'm struggling now with "Red earth and pouring rain", I find that if I put it down and pick it up again a couple of days later I've totally lost the plot!!
Has anybody else read it? and is it worth persevering with??
GFF xx
Thanks for May you be the Mother of a Hundred Sons,I read it ages ago and it is a good read
I hope you have all remembered that today is World Book Day and the recommendations will be pouring in
Here's one from my better half
The Jim Corbett Omnibus
Tales about hunting Man Eating Tigers and Leopards in India, I haven't read it as it's not my sort of thing but my husband says its good
For new books Literati is best. It's in an old Portuguese house next to La Fenice Restaurant (at ABC Farms) near the Calangute/Candolim border. It also has a secondhand section, and serves drinks and snacks. Both Oxford Books (near St Anthony's chapel - the one in the middle of the road) and the bookstore at Acron Arcade in Candolim flatter to deceive - plenty of space but not that many books. In Panijm Hotel Mandovi and the INOX cinema have small but good bookshops.
For secondhand books plenty of shacks, shops, travel agents etc have small stocks, but the best range i have come across is at Jay Jay's in Baga (just before Cavala) which gives half the money back if you return the book. There is also a good one on CSM road, which also has some books to rent.
One to avoid is the one near Calngute maket by the "Baga roundabout", which is run by a very grumpy old codger who charges more for manky old secondhand books than they would cost new.
Books are almost always cheaper in India than in the UK - even ones imported from the UK!
Two Wheels in the Dust, from Kathmandu to Kandy - Anne Mustoe
Yoga School Dropout - Lucy Edge
Iz
there are now 2 copies on Amazon at £92 is that a joke. I wonder why it hasnt been re-published perhaps we should find out who they are and let them know of our interest!re :Goan freaks
cheers Lyn
City Of Joy - Dominique Lapierre
Has lassiboy read the second omnibus I have found the first one on Amazon and thought I might just order both 12 sleeps to go
I have just heard of this book written by a Goan author and think it is only available in India
The Girl by Sonia Faleiro
It is set in Goa and really gives you a feel of the State, reading the book you are transported straight into a sleepy Goan village- beautiful portuguese homes, old churches delicious food, village gossip and all. This is a great read especially if you have been to Goa, or are thinking of going.
Sounds good has anyone read it?
ps--- the old boy has never even tried a glass of Lassi sticks to the Kingfisher
p.s. I'll let kingfisherboy know how I get on with the second omnibus It's more based on village life in India a s opposed to hunting
Can you buy better ones in Goa?
PhilinGoa Thanks for the list of bookshops in the north.
The best bookshop in the south is in Margao called Golden Eye Emporium it is down the street to the left of the post office as you face it, about 100mts along , you cant miss the huge sign.
cheers Lyn x
p.s. The Rough Guide when describing Cavelossim talks about fast food outlets and a/c shopping malls think I must have missed those definitely a ROUGH guide
Another interesting one is "Chasing The Monsoon" by Alexander Frater, you can get it in paperback and it follows the authors travels when he follows the arrival of the monsoon in Kerala right through to its arrival in Assam and it includes a chapter on its arrival in Goa and the authors stay in the Taj. It's a facinating glimpse of India at at time when most of us are back home Alan
Just want to add a lovely little book by Anita Desai - A Village By The Sea written for young readers, but I think anyone would find it interesting .Although the village isn't in Goa I think life would have been very similar there in a fishing village , when the book was written in 1982. There are reveiws on amazon.
Im reasing 'Shantaram' at the moment. By Gregory David Roberts. Great read!
