The size you quote is fine for Easyjet at least:

I've just got a new one from Tripp so now on short stays we just pay for one hold luggage (for toiletries etc.) and take one small case and another small holdall. The price for hold luggage seems on the increase. :(

Given that Ryanair tend to be the strictest in relation to size, I'd ensure you get a case that meets their requirements and then you should be fine for the other airlines.

As mentioned Tripp do a great range of cabin luggage, you can buy direct @ http://www.tripp.co.uk or via Debenhams website or in store

I've always used a holdall when travelling with Ryanair and never had any problems (except for carrying the blooming thing - 10 kg is surprisingly heavy on the shoulders!) Bear in mind that wheels, handles etc. have to fit inside these dimensions.

Thanks. Needs to be a case.

Think I might just opt for one at 51x36x21 and take it to the airport one night to try it!

I've used a 35 litre rucksack on Ryan Air before which is 50x45x20cms with no problem. I got away with a 35 litre rucksack on Ryan Air which is 50x45x20cms 2 years ago on Dublin-Stansted returning 2 days later, the dimensions on their website are 55x40x20cms. I realise that I might have been lucky to get away with this.
