Camel Ride

Its a few years now since we did a cruise, so if you read some of the latest reviews this may be mentioned, but it used to be on many of the cruisers, that whilst down in Aswan, you had the opportunity to take a camel ride there & also visit the Nubian village. It was not particularly
expensive, but of course the camel men must have their baksheesh!
I found them not very comfy at all. though that partly depends on the state of the 'saddle' & I'm sure on one occasion I was bitten by fleas! It seems like an awful way up off the ground as well, but its just one of those things that given the chance, you just have to do. It's an experience everyone should try!

It's also possible to take a camel ride on the West Bank in Luxor. Not for me though, they don't seem to like me!!! If you need any info on Luxor be happy to help.

Hi Iberis and Sandie

Thanks a lot for your responses. We're fifty-fifty on whether or not we want a camel ride but, as you say, it's an opportunity that we may not get again.

Kind regards

It has been a long tome since I was last in Egypt. But I do remember at the time the local Reps ( I mean local as in they were egyptians themselves) advised us tourists not to take a camel ride. There are some 'greedy' camel owners that will tell you the price and then when your 'ride' has come to an end, they will demand more money from you. If you don't pay up they refuse to make the camel bend down so that you can get off.

I understand it is also very uncomfortable and not for the faint hearted. Sat on a camel's back you are very high up, and as the camel walks you tend to move from side to side and feels like you are going to fall off. Well. that is what my friend told me anyway, as I declined to take a ride myself.

Hello
We did a camel ride as one of the "trips" booked independently through Jolleys Travel in Luxor. We were picked up from our hotel at about 4.30pm (when its a bit cooler), taken across to the West Bank and introduced to our camels and handler (young boy who leads you).
The owner also has horses so you can decide (beautiful Arab horses). The camels were fine, although it is a long way up but you have wooden things back and front to hold on to. Can be uncomfortable if you cant shift into the right position.
Its a laugh - something you dont do every day and well worth it! Go on TRY!!
