can she dive at just 14yrs old

hi,
can anyone please tell me if there is an age limit on diving in egypt,the reason i ask is that my x-wife wants to take our daughter there on a diving holiday,she will only be 14,she tells me that the tour operator has said she will be ok,but i'm really not to sure,i want to know for certain before i put my foot down and say no,

I am sure like you your xwife has your daughter's interests as first priority and will have checked this out properly.

i dont doubt that at all,i just wanted to know if there was an age requirement as it is a very dangerous sport,and to be honest i dont realy like the thought of it,being over protective i spose.

She certainly can do the PADI Junior Open Water course at 14. She could even do Junior Advanced Open Water. And once she turns 15 she becomes an Open Water diver with no further qualification. That's the regulations...

Lot's of teenagers do this. My daughter learned at 13.

I would however advise against anyone who is a bit headstrong learning - even some adults.

Bibbs, the age limit is 8.

If you click HERE, you will see what can be done at 14 (under Discovery Programs on the right). Special attention is taken when this involves children.

If she has never tried diving before the best move would be to go on a discover Scuba programme (one day - bit of theory and a gentle dive in a small group or 1-2-1 with instructor) first. If she likes it - fine. If not, or gets scared with all the kit etc then retreat to the beach.

my 2 daughters did discover scuba last year at 12 and 15 and did a couple of dives...this year they both did their open water PADI diver course at 13 and 16 (I know i am good at maths!!) and really enjoyed the four days. I have no worries about them diving now at all..

Hi my daughter did her open water at 11 years old in Egypt 2 years ago and she loved it, now she dives with her dad everytime we go on holiday , I am a terrible worry wart but was impressed with the dive school and all the safety proceedures.

i was worried coz she's not a strong swimmer,cant dive into a swimming pool and doesn't tread water,so the thought of her trying scuba diving filled me with dread,especially as i would not be there to keep an eye on things,but hey ho cant keep her wrapped in cotton wool for ever.

She will have to swim 200 yards (approx) as part of the course. If she can't do 8 lengths of a 25m pool in one go, and tread water for 5 minutes you have a 'water tight' excuse to say 'No!'.

i was just getting used to the idea,now i'm back to square one,as i just said,shes not a strong swimmer,no way that she could swim 200 yards,and cant tread water,i got a feeling i'm going to be the ogre in someones eyes.

The first day of an open water course will test her swimming ability and they do have to swim the 200meters and tread water to progress.

Perhaps it would be better for her own confidence if she tried a snorkelling trip with one of the dive clubs ( we went with Aquarius) and got usde to the red sea that way. They totally adapt to the swimming ability of the people they have with them and everybody gets to see all the fish and the reefs, but without the stress of having to dive..she may well progress in her own time then.

Personally I love to snorkel, but don't enjoy diving that much!!

i could not understand why they wanted to go on a diving holiday in the first place,my daughter doesn't like the sea,cant get her out of a swimming pool tho,i love to snorkel,but ive never been able to get her to try,as i said before i'll take a back seat on this one,they can go but hopefully she wont progress,at least that way i wont be the one who gets the blame.
i'm away to turkey in three weeks time with my daughter so i shall try again to get her to go snorkeling with me,perhaps if she joins me and i can see for my self what shes like in the sea i shall feel much better about the whole thing, :hmmm
