It has been a long time since I was on this forum but I have returned as I am planning a DIY trip to Canada and USA (NYC). Places my wife and I will be staying in over an 12 night duration will include:
Ottawa (ON) - 3 Nights
Toronto (ON) - 3 Nights
Niagara Falls (ON) - 2 Nights
New York City (NY)- 4 Nights
I assume from my research to date that this is a logical and achievable plan and will be checking the forums out for tips and advice, but having briefly scanned them already I have not found the answer to the following question.
Is it cheaper to buy clothing (esp designer labels) in Canada (Esp Ottawa and Toronto) than it is in USA (Esp NYC)?
(I am assuming both will be cheaper than the UK, by the way?)
The reason I am asking is that we plan to take very few clothes with us and actually buy them over there as we go, but this is subject to prices etc - There's no point buying clothes in Canada that we can get somewhat cheaper in USA a few days later, just for the sake of saving a few Kilo's on the outward baggage.
As always, all advice is greatly appreciated. I am travelling in September 2008. Thanks!!

We've been to Toronto/Ottawa/Niagara Falls in 2006. The shopping in Toronto was OK but nothing special.
This year we were in New York and went for one day to the Outlets centre and that was great value for money. We got 3 pairs of Levis for £ 40.00 (78 USD), great Armani shirt for 19 USD (from 90
), Sketchers - buy 1 pair for $ 49.95 and second pair is half price (and you can use a voucher that you get in Information centre so you might get another 10 - 20 percent off). As you can imagine we did loads of shopping.
One girl I know lives in Montreal, Canada, and when she was working in a clothes shop, they were buying clother from USA, selling them with profit and it was still cheaper that in the UK (we know becuase we bought some Levis from her shop for 49 Canadian dollars).

Thank you, looks like we'll take enough clothes to last most of our Canada visit and then do our main clothing shop in USA then.
