In the event that a volcanic ash cloud prevents your flight from operating and it is cancelled, your entitlements are contained in Articles 5, 8 and 9.
In the event that the CAA advise the airline that the flight cannot take place or ground all flights due to the effect of volcanic ash, then the airline will not be liable to pay compensation under Article 7 as they will rightly cite the defence in Article 5.3 of 'extraordinary circumstances'. This does not exonerate the airline from the obligations under Articles 8 & 9 which must be provided whatever the circumstances.
