Hi,
We are going to Playa Blanca from the airport in feb 2010 and i was wondering if anyone knows the best/quickest/easiest (not nesseccerily the same route) there. Its my first time driving abroad which i cant wait for. I am a driving instructor too so hopefully will make the transition from right hand to left hand drive easy (spend most of the day driving in passenger seat anyway). I have hired a 9 seater to with 4 adults 2 children + luggage (just incase there are any steep mountianous roads we may struggle up) Any road number would be great as i can look at them on google earth. There seems to be 1 main route on the motorway/carraigeway and 1 route thats cuts across the mountain.
Thanks for any help/advise.

Where in PB are you heading?

The route through Femes, over the mountains, takes you into the Eastern part of PB while the route past Yaiza takes you into the centre. To be honest there's not much in it but if you're heading East or Central I'd go past Yaiza.

Take the LZ2 towards Yaiza. Before you get to Yaiza there is a roundabout, turn left towards Femes for the mountain road or straight on towards Yaiza on the LZ30. Don't go through Yaiza, there is a bypass, but if you end up missing it you'll rejoin the main road on the other side of the town. Driving in Lanzarote is easy, it will take you about 30 minutes from the airport to PB.

Thankyou very much for that info. I'll look on google earth to be sure of that route.

Hi Bob, as robertk says that route is the best and to be honest the only one as far i as know, Robert is right about the Yaiza part with its bypass , but i usually miss it on purpose just to drive through Yaiza as its the most beautiful village and i'm sure your passengers will thank you! it doesn't take any longer really either.

Playa Blanca is fine to drive around, the roads are in good condition , the road users friendly and polite, i've never had any problems driving over there and i'm still fairly new to it and also have to contend with the gearstick as i drive an automatic in the UK. The roads are also quiet compared to what we have here and you do have time to think, i actually enjoy driving over there!

I agree with the previous posters, that route is very scenic, if you stay off the motorways the roads are very quiet. We managed just under 300km in 2 days and it was all very enjoyable especially in the north.
I hired a diesel Opel Corsa for 2 days from Posh Cars in PDC and it cost 46e, it was the cheapest I could get and I had no problems.

If anyone is looking for car hire without a credit card in the canaries then Hertz is you place. It's a 500 euro cash deposit wich you get back no problem when you return the car.

Book though one of their agents as booking direct is more expensive.

Is it correct that you need to have an illuminous waistcoat spare to wear if you breakdown? Is it the law and should the hire car company provide one? I have hired with orcar.
Thanks, bob.

There wasn't one with our hire car in Majorca, luckerly we had taken the ones from our car that cost us £1-99.It is law that if you breakdown and get out of your car each of you should wear a bib.

Just phoned orcar canarias and they said they supply the illuminous jackets in their cars.

Hi All,

This forum looks great. I was looking for reviews of Autoreisen, I found them here, and glad I did. It's exactly what I wanted to hear about them, as they came up as the cheapest on my search. I take they're still as good as the early reviews I read???

I know they have 'SuperCDW', and they don't seem to be a company that try & pin charges on you for nothing, but I was going to take out insurance here to cover me for any Excess, tyres, glass, underbody etc., which I don't believe is covered, as recommended on 'moneysavingexpert'. From a quick search, this costs about £4.50 a day I think it was in the UK. Anyone any idea how much Autoreisen charge for this extra insurance?

I know people say they don't give you the hard-sell like other companies, but I'm tempted to get covered anyway in case of problems.

Thanks,

joe

Can anyone tell me if Auto reisen or if not them any other firm have car seats for young babies, i mean the seats that are rear facing rather than foward facing as my baby will only be 12 weeks old so i need an appropriate seat.
We used auto resien before and were very happy with them so im happy to use again if they have the right seats.

Has anyone rented a Renault Megane Cabriolet from Autoreisen?

Are they new and in good shape?

just looking at booking one and cant understand why they are half the price of some of the other operators

many thanks

I've used autoreisen a few times now and have always found them to be excellent. Baby seats are free but you have to ask for them at the time of booking to make sure you get one. I don't know if you will get the ne you're looking for though so it might be ebettr to take your own. As for the reanult megane, you don't always get the exact model you've booked but you will always get one the same size and class or better.

Why are they so cheap? I don't know, their cars tend to be a bit older than other companies but I've never had a problem with any one I've had.

Hello all,
Just hoping someone can tell me the car hire companies in Matagorda , we have been here before but i can't think what hire company was there , help would be great , dont want a car from airport only want it for a couple of days !!thanks

There are at least four car hire offices in Matagorda, one by the Beatriz playa hotel
and three in the shopping centre on the prom a couple of minutes walk away.
Walk past them so often and yet never notice the names! Seem to think
one is Hertz and another Plus Car.

cheers

Hello,

We're coming to Playa Blanca on 19th for 2 weeks. We've been before and hired a car but this time decided to go through our holiday suppliers, First Choice. However, think we've made a mistake, yes they were the cheapest BUT, they use the broker called Holiday Autos who have used Orlando Canaries as the hire car supplier. When I have googled, I've found nothing but bad news about both of these companies but especially about Orlando Canaries, can anyone else agree or disagree? We want to cancel our car hire and go with who we've used before (Plus Car) but as far as we can tell we have to pay a £15 cancellation fee (to Holiday Autos, First Choice seem to have nothing more to do with it) and then they will only refund the money when they receive the voucher we were given by First Choice back and all that's got to happen within a week. When we booked at First Choice, we weren't made aware of the terms and conditions of hire with Holiday Autos...nor did I know we would have to pay a cash insurance excess and for a tank of fuel on collection can I claim I was mis-sold to attempt to waive the cancellation fee?? This will teach us to do our research beforehand!

My family and I have just returned from costa tequise and we hired a car from cebrera medina out side our hotel complex. We were very happy with our rental, because there were 6 of us we hired a brand new opal zafira with less than 7000 kms on clock for 3 days and it cost 115 euros. Usually the price is 195 euros for the same amount of time. There deals they have on, cover all there different ranges of cars. They even gave us a free cd about the island which was interesting as you drive around, you just type in your location number and it tells you all about the area your in.
