These appear to be very expensive. Anyone find a cheaper way of doing this
thanks

Probably been asked a hundred times before but if I rent a car in Malaga can I take it into Gibraltar?
I have done it (car from Record Rentacar) but wouldn't do it again as the queues going in and coming out again were very long. I would leave the car at the Spanish side, walk over the border, then hop on a bus.
I wondered if anybody has ever used Malagacar.com and whether they are any good?
I have merged your post with an existing sticky topic on car hire which may have some information.

http://www.carhire4malaga.com who sent us a free guide book for Andalusia as well. v pleased!
we booked an auto-europe car for less than 150gbp for 2 weeks to pick up at malaga airport. we actually booked it through Everything went through very quickly and smoothly but it seems that all the car hire companies now have joined the same S C A M- selling you a tank of petrol and asking you to return it empty. We arrived to be charged £76 for a full tank of diesel which was a surprise to us. Should we have being staying locally I would have been very angry about this, but as it was we had a two hour journey to our destination and did use the car to go out and about every day and the warning light came on about 10 kms from the airport which worked out fine.
I didnt seem to see any info about this on the details of car hire when we booked it, and it wasnt until we picked up the car that we discovered what I would call a S C A M.
Regarding the Gibralter query, we visited Gib with the hired car and got through no problem, but on the way out it was our car which was pulled aside to be checked over by customs - probably because they could see it was hired and was an estate and they were looking for cigarettes - fortunately we had nothing to declare!

Sorry, I've only just seen this question - I think one of the problems of these big topics is that questions do sometimes get buried.
Anyway, in case it's not too late - Yes I use malagacar.com frequently and I really like them.
They are just off the airport on the approach road and they transfer you to the garage in a minibus.
The plus side of this is that you don't have to wait in the horrendous airport queues or negotiate your way around the building works.
Also droping off is much simpler as they transfer you directly to the terminal.
The cars are always good and they operate a half tank/return empty fuel policy which I don't feel is overpriced.
So do malagacars not sell you a full tank of petrol/diesel then and you return it empty???? I thought all companies had jumped onto this bandwagon, making car hire very expensive if you are not doing a lot of miles. We got charged around £80 with Sixt for a tank of diesel [on top of hire], they ended up giving us a huge passat estate car when we only asked for an Astra!
Like you, I have a 2 hour jouney from the airport but half a tank might make a big difference to someone who isn't travelling far.
Free upgrades on the cars is something to watch out for as bigger cars usually means bigger fuel tanks but I've never been offerred an upgrade at malagacar, we've always got the size we've booked.
The biggest plus for me is avoiding the 90 minute queues at the airport - we usually work on being on our way down the motorway an hour after the plane has landed which isn't bad at all.
Hi folks, we (5 adults) arrive @ Malaga airport at 2pm on Monday June 30th. We need to rent a car something like a Scenic or C-Max fully inclusive / no xs etc, does anybody have any recommendations? We normally use Carjet or AutoEurope but don't fancy the sound of a 90 minute queue. Is it busy all the time or just certain days? Someone mentioned about booking off the airport?

I don't actually know, I've only heard the horror stories.

Hi, Has anyone used record Go, car rental company before? if so did you have any problems?

I've just booked our hire car with them (based on HT recommendations I may add!) for the end of the month and they only sell you half a tank, which is priced at 20E - 40E depending on the model you chose.
tank of fuel when you pick up the car. The queues at their desk have been a problem in
peak season, but the queues at most of the other desks have been equally long !
We always got a car that was a only few months old and usually got a free upgrade. Last
time we got a 1.5lt diesel Renault Megane with just 39Km on the clock but I only booked
(and paid for) a Renault Clio.

looking to rent two cars for our holiday in Malaga in August 2009, need a good company but cheap too!!!!
Please leave name of car rental, website, cost etc... Thanks
I want to hire a car for 10 days in April. I've used Europecar in the past but, as has been said already, the queues can be horrendous. So, Malagacar sounds ideal to me if they are out of the airport. Does anyone know the arrangements for picking you up and taking you to their depot?
Hi JayJay, there is a courtesy bus to take you to and from the airport. It's only avery short ride away. The instructions on where to pick it up will be with your booking.
Booked with Goldcar on 6th Apr to pick up on 8th Apr and all they had left was a Group S Citroen Berlingo.
It cost us €319 for 8 days hire - if I was to book next week the same rental period it's only €144 - what a ripoff just cos it's easter
Not only that but as it's over 3 days hire, you have to take it on a full/empty basis for fuel - i tried at the airport to negotiate full/full but they wouldn't have it. Wouldn't mind but it's such a ripoff.
€75 for fuel and a €14 subsidy for it being Diesel - turns out diesel is €0.849 (petrol was €0.919) so I was charged the equivalent of 104 litres for a vehicle that only has a 60 litre tank and a subsidy for diesel which is cheaper than petrol
Gonna challenge them on the fuel cost and diesel subsidy as it works out about £35 overcharge
We understand that Gibraltar Airport is the nearest to La Duquesa but are confused regarding Car Hire, it seems that you have to walk accross the border to La Linea to pick up your car. My husband is disabled and we will have my son, his girlfriend and their baby daughter with us so as you can imagine I'm a bit worried about how we will get to the car hire place and how far we will have to walk.
The alternative is to fly into Malaga (better choice of flights obviously) and hire a car here but it could take up to 2 hours to drive to La Duquesa if we avoid the toll roads. Last time we flew into Malaga we hired a car from Simply Wheelz who bussed us out to their garage, we didn't think this was the best plan, what with having the baby etc. but reading the posts here about long queues at the airport based car hire companies I'm now totally confused!
What would you more experienced travellers advise?
