I never have John, but it's about 4 years since I was last there.
If I'm hiring a car on holiday anywhere, I always carry a good photocopy of my passport in my wallet - keep the actual passport secure in a safety deposit box.
Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. As with Glynis tho', I haven't been to Turkey since 2012.
