Also in Portugal the government announced a few years ago that they were raising the price of cigarettes and tobacco in an attempt to reduce consumption etc, similar to what was done in France and the UK - remember when cigs were cheap in France?
The government here applied a 10% increase in duty every year. I think this year is the last year in which this increase will apply.
Yes they are cheaper in Spain and I imagine the Portuguese equivalent of white van man is over the border quite a bit. A lot of things in Spain are cheaper than in Portugal - go to the ferry at Vila Real and you will see all the old ladies going across to Ayamonte to do their shopping.
If you go into Spain to buy ciggies/tobacco, where do you stand re Customs etc when you come back into the UK? Is it no different from if you holidayed in Spain even though you've brought them back via Portugal? I'm asking cos we both buy our full limit of cigarettes and tobacco and I don't to have them confiscated!!!
the limits apply as EU if you buy them in Spain and come back through Portugal the UK advisory limits still apply
Next question: is it easy to get from Praia da Rocha to the Spanish border and if so, how?
It might be worth the hassle for those kind of savings!!
Hi, If you buy a largish quantity of cigarettes can you pay on credit card? and if so do they charge for using it? thanks.
Bought mine on credit card and no extra charge in the shop and when the bill came the exchange rate was ok, so I would do it again, only thing was when I bought them I hadnt got out of the shop when I had a call on my mobile, it was my credit card company security dept asking me if i had just made a transaction in Portugal, I think the reason being was because I hadnt used my card for ages and they were just making sure it was me.
Thanks for that
Or go to Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the Portuguese side and lash out €3 to take the little passenger ferry across and back.
No one has yet said for sure that the Portuguese customs are stopping the equivalent of white van man as he comes back from Spain laden to the eyeballs with cigs, but I am sure it's only a matter of time given the disparity in prices.
Thanks for that cubsur. Is it possible to get a train?

hi i am going to alberfura in portugal this week does anyone know the prices of golden virginia tobacco thankyou
There's another post about cigarette/tobacco prices further down. cubsur said on 4/9/08 that Golden Virginia is 68.50 euros for 10. I think prices are the same throughout Portugal as it's set by the Government.
Thats correct roswell the price of Golden Virginia is 68.50 euros for 10 packs, and as you say it is the same price all around. Amberleaf is slightly cheaper at around approx 48 euros for same packs.
Anyone know the latest prices of cigarettes in Portugal? Thankyou.
Prices went up a little on Jan 1 following a rise in VAT otherwise there is no substantial change from recent information above.
Thankyou.
