Well, I'm sure someone will be on to correct me if I'm wrong. But I don't really think there is a city nearby.

If you are looking to go somewhere of an evening Namma Bay is the place most people go for a meal or drink and to look round the shops.

By City your not thinking of Cairo are you? That's the famous city in Egypt, but it miles from the Red Sea Resorts.

Sharm!

Sharm is an area that covers the south west tip of the Sinai Peninsular. There is a large port at Old Sharm. Many of the cruise ships that tour up and down the Red Sea dock there.

City.....? There are many small towns / settlements in Sinai but no cities.

Could the answer be Cario???

With almost 200 hotels, an airport with almost 100 flights per day, maybe over a thousand shops, a small ferry port and a marina, and 20000 - 50000 tourists staying there at any one time, is Sharm not a city ?

It needs a cathedral to be called a city

Don't find many cathedrals in Arab countries. A city doesn't necessarily have a cathedral - Wikipedia defines a city as 'an urban area that is differentiated from a town, village, or hamlet by size, population density, importance, or legal status'. In the UK the legal status is more important than it sometimes is elsewhere.

Sharm el Sheikh, Nuweiba, Dahab, Taba - all known as cities by some.

Errr.....yeh..... I realise that there aren't too many cathedrals in Arab countries.

I was trying a little humour...obviously didn't work! :?

It wasn't my intention to turn this thread into a debate regarding what or what not defines a city etc etc etc

What we really need is a more detailed question...
Why did you ask, Michelle?

Our town was the largest in England until they designated a large old church to cathedral status,We then became a city.

because i was trying to get the weather on bbc weather centre and you have to put in nearsest city or port sharm was not on the list for egypt

Then you might find this or other posts on the Weather Thread in the 'Stickies' at the top of the Forum useful.

Cairo is the nearest city on the BBC weather pages - but will be a poor reflection on the weather in Sharm, Red Sea breezes etc will affect the temperature quite a lot.

It's not much use using the BBC site to get the weather in Egypt. They can hardly get it right here! There's a whole thread at the top of the index page about weather in Egypt.

(Brighton & Hove hasn't got a cathedral, but is a city)

EDIT: I must remember to type faster.

So must I Ev, mate - was editing as you were typing.

Best place on the BBC pages is actually likely to be Dahab, Taba, or Eilat in Israel.
