Yes they certainly knew it was going to happen. It was being talked about when we were in Playa last September. I agree that they didn't know for sure the dates, but they could of let people know that it MAY of been happening.

We wrote to them saying that they must have known at some time it was to happen. As yet no reply, wrote end of January and sent photos. The people who travelled a week later than us got a phone calll prior to travelling

Yes, I have complained to Thompson. Just got their fob off letter saying it is down to Mexican Government. They and/or Riu must have known this was planned. Millions of pound beach renovation contracts like this don't happen overnight. Surely it is Thomson's responsibity to perform due diligence that they can provide the beach facilities advertised in the brochure. I will now threaten them with small claims court, any advice?

Have complained in resort and also phoned to lodge my complaint in the UK.
Had letter fob off from Thomson and responded, I am awaiting their reply.
Will be writing to company directors if I do not receive a satisfactory response.

I would be very wary of using ABTA, especially in view of this complaint - http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=142721

I would view them as nothing more than an association for travel agents and travel companies, who are more interested in getting the heat off their members than looking after the long suffering public.

The complaint I have drawn attention to appears to indicate that their arbitration service is useless, so what's the point of spending time and money using it?

What travel companies fear are trading standards and the civil courts, which cost them.

Although the beach renovation project has been talked about for many years in Playa del Carmen the work in Playacar was started by the Local Goverment who did not give official notification to the hoteliers there until mere hours before they moved the machinery in. They had restored the beach further up the resort before this and there was a lot of speculation as to how long that work would take so nobody would commit to any dates.

There are quite a few local articles and discussion online that will verify this but its probably not the information you were hoping for. :(

Still not received any reply from Thomson re our complaint letter. Wrote to them 28th January.

That is disgraceful I suggest you follow this up immediately.

I am still awaiting a 2nd response from Thomson. I have re-iterated that it is their responsibility to do due diligence and I will take them to court.

Ella - I suspect that the Local Goverment did liase with hoteliers but the hoteliers requested that "official notification" was not provided. This way they don't have to tell customers in advance and profits are not affected.

You do not commence work like this without major project planning. If i had had and idea that this was likely to happen in January, I would have booked my holiday in Jamaica.

Hi billywig - I understand your point and perhaps there was some of that going on at a higher level, it is Mexico after all! However, that certainly didnt help the hotels who had to deal with all of the (quite rightly) upset customers. It will be interesting to see the outcome of these cases and find out who the blame does lie with.

I have contacted Ros and from my conversation it sounds as if we all have a valid claim.

Please contact them as the more people the better the claim will stand up.

They will give a free written assessment and normally work on a no win no fee basis.

Let's get somewhere with this people!

We have still not heard back from Thomson, having written end of January re Riu closed beach. I sent photos to accompany the letter too. Am thinking of writing to them again.
