its not true that the females carry their eggs under their wings!!! and if you stamp on them they spread the eggs!!! so stamp away...

Angie,

Hate to tell you but the female " German " cockroach does carry it's eggs on its body right up until they are ready to hatch. :yikes This is why you shouldn't stamp on them.

The common cockroach drops it's egg case onto various objects and leaves them to hatch, which could be weeks.

My nearest brush with a cockroach came in Greece, Rhodes to be exact. I was sitting on the loo and reached for the toilet roll and the little bleeder was in the middle of the roll. Did I get a fright? Lets just say I was lucky I was sitting where I was :D
In Tenerife I saw more lizards than cockroaches and I've never seen them in my room. I wouldn't let it put me off the Canaries as I don't think there are any more there than anywhere else.

Been to the reef over 20 times now, and i can say we rarely see any.

It must be less than 10 in all the years i have been going.

Now gran canaria, our apt was running with them, but i think, that is because the apts and hotels are built intos the side of the hills.

Just my view

Saw a few of the little beauty,s in Gran canaria , I actually brought one home :yikes with me via a towel that had been hung out on a dryer on the balcony, but they are pretty harmless. I used to sit on the apartment balcony with a glass of wine in one hand and a sweeping brush in the other :rofl , its a good job their was a flat roof underneath and not someone elses apartment.
However in Tenerife, I didnt see one !!

Just got back last week from a fantastic two weeks in Las Americas, we stayed at the Colon 2 appartments which, I've got to say, are probably the best appartments I've ever stayed in in Tenerife. However, getting back to the subject, there were quite a lot of kookurachas (sp?) in and around the appartments and the patch area. We had two in our room, we saw 5 in the courtyard and probably a dozen outside the complex. We also saw them in a couple of the pubs (Brewer's droop and the Railway).
Of course they fled when you went near them and are harmless but my wife made me sleep with the windows shut and it was hot!

There was a comedy moment when I chased one with a spray can and slipped on the fluid on the floor.. my shoulder's still hurting nearly a fortnight later :D

The management of Colon 2 got the exterminators in twice during the first week of our stay and we didn't see any in the complex after that, I think it takes two sprayings several days apart to decimate them.

Oh, and they don't fly.......... except for 1 week or so during the year. Several people confirmed that they had a 'flying season' and it was best to get off the Island when it happens. Yuk :(

We got back 2 weeks ago probably around our 35 visit..Never found them a problem in any of the places we have stayed.

But my hubby left his trainers out on our 3rd floor balcony for 2 weeks, then packed them to come home in his flip flops...

Arrived home opened case and 2 of the little buggers crawled out :yikes ...I was there with the raid and swiftly sent them over to "the other side"...But had too wash everything again, despite washing everything before we left as I was spooked about "eggs"!

So check your cases folks.

The higher your apartment the less likely you will see them.
If you are at ground level especially with a patio opening onto the garden areas you are much more likely to be visited, unfortunately lots of restaurants are at ground floor level and restaurants have food.
They do infest many kitchens and owners have a constant battle, you have to keep destroying the eggs, they will never be eradicated.
I have two apartments one on the third floor and another on the fourth floor of differant complexes and have never had any to my knowledge in either apartment but owners of ground floor apartments have.
I have been in Santa Cruz in an evening and seen literally thousands coming up through the drain covers.
Don`t leave any food out and empty your waste bin to the basura twice a day.
On the complexes where I have my apartments we have all the drains fumigated every two weeks and don`t have much trouble.
It`s like anything else, good practice is essential, get on a nasty cheap complex where maintanance is not a priority and I will guaranttee you will have problems.
The very best advice I can give is go by recommendation and don`t have cheapness as your priority.
