New documentary started last night. Covered how the islanders are coping with the downturn in tourism and the hike in prices. One English lady (married to a Greek) is finding it cheaper to shop via Tesco online and have it driven over by courier that to shop locally, even Greek olive oil was cheaper via Tesco. Greece is not to my mind expensive [although i never went in the days of the Drachma] and the prices we paid in the shops and tavernas was around the same as the last 4 years, I think many have been put off by stupid comments in the press and on TV about them having to leave the Euro [something Germany and France would do their utmost to stop] and the reports of riots and demonstrations [these happend mainly in Athena and Theasaloniki and never on the islands

I've been watching this series and enjoying the insight into the island.
Over the last decade I think Lidl have been opening larger supermarkets on the Greek islands and Corfu has several.

The local minimarkets are like our corner shops and so the prices would be higher and I guess buying at Tesco and shipping from the UK would be cheaper. Bit of a long wait if you just fancy a Ginsters pasty
Going back a few years the islands would have been pretty much agricultural before tourism and everything grown or produced on the island with the few needed items shipped over from the mainland. I can remember hotels having chickens running about and areas where they grew all their veg and fruit, and pretty much everyone had a plot of land with a goat and a few chickens or gardens full of veg growing.
I went out with a local on zakynthos fishing a good few years back and it was so easy and quick to dive for an octopus and chucked a net out and caught a bucket full of little spratts. They were cooked up on a BBQ and we had them with fresh tomatoes from the garden. Simple life..
I'm still enjoying the series too. It was a bit sad on the last show to hear about the olive trees and how the couple were having to store the olives hoping for a price increase. That, coupled with the fact on a previous show it told of how it was cheaper to buy imported Olive Oil made you wonder just what the outcome is going to be regarding the future of the Olive groves.
is it a seris.. i thought it was a one off i only watched the first one
You can do catch up Brian via my link above
too late spent last evening watching them and a couple of other documentaries i missed, thanks
