Holiday Complaints

Do you have a holiday complaint? For help and advice post in here.

I'm not sure why you've posted this report here in the 'Complaints' forum. You clearly didn't like this holiday and I'm sure that your review will be of interest to others contemplating such a trip but it does sound as if Cosmos did fulfill their contract even if it didn't meet your expectations.

I'm especially perplexed by the fact that you knew the date when the balance was payable, asked for 4 days grace when it came to paying it and then asked for a further days grace which they gave you and yet you complain about their bad attitude. In this instance you were in default of your contract with them. They would have been fully entitled to cancel your holiday on the Friday on the basis of none payment of the balance let alone on the following Wednesday.

I agree with SMa - you were fortunate that they allowed you to delay payment, You were fully aware that it was due on a particular date. You were trying to play the system.

The welcome meetings are often complained about elsewhere on HT. They are a marketing opportunity for TOs. - yet many do attend and buy so you cannot blame them.

My personal approach is to simply ask for a rep to see me after the meeting and leave them to get on with it.

Overpriced? Yet again advice aplenty here on HT. Always check locally before you book with the rep. Could do that on a short trip such as this whilst they are delivering the sales pitch. I have only ever found them cheaper on one occasion in all the years we have been travelling.

Extras - You do need to read the brochure with care, it is easy to miss these things

Crowded/Disorganised. That is what you get on these packages,

I do feel sympathetic as you spent a lot of money and didn't get the 'quality' of experience you anticipated.

A well worded review, put in the 'Other destinations' review section would be helpful to warn others of the very 'packaged' nature of these tours. It will state at the top that you went with Cosmos who seem to be your main bone of contention.

IMHO you wouldn't have faired any better with thomson, First Choice et al.

If the accommodation that you stayed at doesn't feature an Admin will add it for you if you ask.

There has been complaints on this board about Lapland trips before, most of which unfortunately mention all the things you do.

Maybe you should have done more research and pay when you said.
You got that you paid for.
They aren't to know if you have money in your account or not.

I'd like to add in defence of the reps.
Reps have to "nanny' guests to a certain degree, mind the step, mind your head, be careful etc etc. They have to show due care and attention towards the guests because many, many people file claims against TO's every year for accidents on holiday. They are told to do this by their managers and if they had shown no care for you and your youngsters, and something had happened then I'm sure the complaint would have been the other way around. For reps, its a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation and in Lapland where there is snow, ice etc etc I think it is extra essential to ensure all guests are looked after as best as possible.

For example, when guests are alighting a coach, we have to watch every single guest and say, mind the step, are you ok?, do you need any help? etc etc in case somebody falls. I feel like a real numpty repeating myself over and over.

Also, if it is a big group, they have to go round with you to make sure nobody goes missing. This happens a lot, folks lose track of time, get lost or whatever.

I can assure you that reps do not like the sound of their own voices on a mic, it is incredibly cringeworthy if like me you have a northern accent. Again, they are just doing what they are told. They probably didn't like it any more than you did.

No matter which company you go with, a Christmas treat like this will be popular and busy and any UK company which is mindful of health and safety will have its reps behave this way.

I'm sorry that you were disappointed by the trip, its a lot of money to pay for something you didn't enjoy and you did get off to a bad start by not getting a santa hat. :cry

Whilst I sympaphise (scuse spelling if its wrong) that you did not enjoy your holiday. I have to say that if any company does not offer warnings even if they do seem common sense to some you will always get someone banging their head and then blaming the rep for not warning them of this danger! Resulting in the "can I claim for this" attitude. If you dont want to be treated in this way then its maybe best to book everything independantly next time.

Again I am sorry you didn't enjoy it, especially your children.

Hi Darren,

Sounds like you may just want to let off STEAM!!!! :rage

That's fine, but this is the Complaints Forum. :offtop

What advice do you require?????

We all have a disappointing hoilday once in a while, but I don't see anywhere in your post a requested outcome, or complaint.

children look at things differently than adults. Im sure that your children will remember the holiday, the snow and seeing santa. After all the long haul 5* holidays my daughter (who is now 19 ) has been on in her life. She still talks about a week we had in a caravan in Waymouth when she was about 4 years old! :duh

I think all the holiday packages to lapland suffer the same problems. I have even read reports in the National Newspaper stating this fact. But comfort yourself that you have still given your children some lovely memories.

Many thanks to all of your replies.

Re the payments: I can't quite remember the details so I think it's my fault for not explaining the circumstances very well to yourselves. Scrap what I wrote: I think the message I was trying to get across was the terrible attitude. I don't tolerate "call centre mentality" very well, and I very much felt Cosmos lacked personal service. Anyway, sorry that it seems like I was trying to play the system - when I wrote this review it was quite late and I'm sure I got my facts wrong.

Re posting this in the wrong place: My apologies again: My objective was just to give a review to be helpful to others. I stumbled across this site after doing a Google search for something like "Cosmos rip off" - just a random moment I had whilst taking a break from what I was doing at the time. I thought it looked like a useful place to post a review. I'm sorry if I got this wrong: to those who have asked if I need advice: no, not at all - this was just a review, but thank you for your kind offer.

Re the reps: yes, you're right, it's the whole UK mentality of "wrap them up in cotton wool lest they put a claim in" / "let's be paranoid to absolutely prevent the worst from happening, even though it's unlikely" Compared with my holiday to Greece in August where you're given much more freedom. Although I went on a package (it was my first, and I'm 39... I've always done things independently before) I soon felt stifled at the reps "safety madness" and chose to do my own thing: it helped that I'd worked in Kardamena two years before so I knew the area.

Re the kids: you're absolutely right: my boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves. My criticism was just of the overselling / commercialism / "let's try to make even more money from these guests" of the Cosmos deal. I said to my partner that if they'd sold a Santa package, and then when we got there we were surprised at the "bonus" of the 3 minute snowmobile / husky / etc rides, then it would have been more acceptable. However, the brochure made a big deal of these includes attractions, and the reality was less than what I was expecting. But yes, we did have a great time, I made sure of that :)
I'm impressed with the number and quality of the replies. Certainly a useful site to bookmark and review future holiday plans. Thank you once again to all who replied.

Thanks for coming back on Darren. I was worried that you would think us unsympathetic and not post again. Your not really in the wrong part of the forum, as we dont have a 'letting of steam' thread. LOL. (sometimes I think we need one).

If you want to leave a review or copy and past what you have done already. If you go to the top of the page there is a banner, you can click on hotel reviews and if your hotel is there put something under other destinations. If its not there ask for it to be added in the Help & Assistance forum at the bottom of the front page, plus do a resort report. I saw at least one for Lapland.

The holiday may not have been quite what you expected, but your kids will remember it forever. :tup

We have an Activity/Specialised Holiday forum near the bottom of the main page which has a topic on Lapland. You may wish to copy your review there.

Can i just say i have also just stumbled upon this review, and we have just come back from Lapland with Cosmos and it was the worst holiday ever. The reps we had on our trip did indeed treat us cattle, we were given the wrong room and when i asked to change, i was told after waiting over an hour that i would have to pay more, i showed them my documents which clearly showed that we had paid for the upgrade and the rep manager said we would have to pay an extra 60 euros a night to upgrade. Also, when you did have any complaints or questions they were nowhere to be found, our rep for the excursions thought it was amusing to have us sing constantly and actually had ago at us one morning at 9.30 when no one would sing, as we had alarm calls at 7.30 just to make sure we were up!!
My child is disabled and the Santa meet and greet he had to wait 3 hours and when we explained that it was now 10pm and he is 9 and he had not been in yet, we were told there are 400 people here you have to wait. Yet adults had been in before him who did not even have children with them.
I totally agree with complaint about the excursions, when we booked they were not sold as a "taster" but as an excursion and i could have got the holiday a lot cheaper if i had booked it myself. We spent ages standing around and we actually never got the artic circle excursion even though we had paid for it.
This holiday was supposed to be a Christmas present to our son and it completely ruined Christmas for us, Cosmos are all about making money, tbh i felt like i was at a very cold cheap Butlins holiday and i would never use them again.

Although posted in the wrong section I would just to like to thank Darren for taking time to write the review, please do copy and paste it into the specialist forum so others can see it when doing searches.

Thanks again

Given that Darren posted this 3 years ago about something that happened in December 2007 and he's never posted anything on HT since I'd be surprised if he gets to read this! However, perhaps teenieweeniefaerie would like to take up the invitation and post a review in the relevant section?
