Cross country skiing -- any ideas where?

Hi Folks

Have been to St Wolfgang, Austria and Yllas in Lapland (for 2 years running) and have fallen in love with cross country skiing. Am browsing the brochures for 2010 and cant believe how expensive Lapland has become (eekkk!) To be honest all of the Feb ski holidays cost about £1,000 each for the week (we have to go in half term).

Can anyone recommend anywhere that is really good for cross country skiing and is pretty snow sure at that time of the year ---- wouldnt want to spend a fortune and not be able to ski. (I know it is a risk but Lapland has spoiled us!)

Any and all ideas very welcome -- even if you tell us to stick to Lapland!

It might be worth having a look at the Julian Alps in Slovenia. I've never been in the winter - only on summer walking holidays but we used the network of cross-country ski trails as the basis for most of our walking and cycling! They go through truly beautiful scenery and are well-graded and set out. Kranska Gora has a good network and whilst Bled is quite low level (making guaranteed snow less likely), the Bohinj area with much higher 'walking' trails is very accessible from there.

Sorry, have just found this - we usually get a message to say there is a reply to a post but havent had one.

We have looked at Sovenia but how snow sure is it. We have been to Lapland and not to have the worry of 'snow or no snow' was a really blessing that takes some beating!

I would expect the snow to be as good as anywhere in February but to re-assure yourself you can check the snow records for most resorts via the Ski Club of Great Britain website.

Thanks - have been keeping an eye open but I think Lapland has spoiled us !

Have to laugh though - have relatives in Lapland this week and it is snowing more here than there !! :tup
