Just to advise that Cyprus now has a greatly improved bus service. Many different routes, much more frequent, and just 1 euro per person or 2 euros for an all day ticket.
This includes journeys such as Larnaca to Paralimni (used to be at least £5 each way).
Note also that buses run between Paralimni - Protaras - Ayia Napa up till 4am, so no need for pricey taxis if you want to go clubbing. The service then starts again at 7am.
Would recommend popping into the bus station office at Paralimni and checking the routes out.

Ah. My daughter will be pleased! Nothing worse then her going out around 9ish and then missing the last bus home and having to get her grandparents out of bed to come and get her from Protaras or Napa! Thanks so much for that, will have to check it out soon. Larnaka to Paralimni = GREAT!
The bus service has greatly upset the local taxi drivers, who see it as unfair competition!
Following a number of protests, the Authorities are now considering increasing the fares on the night services, and reducing frequencies.
I'm just hoping the buses will see off this challenge, as I don't fancy being forced to pay extortionate un-metered taxi fares again.

The taxi drivers are fed up and park up at the bus stops touting for business, it was like been in Egypt again.
surely the way to win business back is to drop your prices ! Rather than sitting all day playing backgammon and then getting one fair for €10 (Pernera to Protaras), surely it would make more sense to drop your prices to €2 or €3 (Pernera to Protaras and vice versa) and get several paying customers a day instread ...
I have been watching the story unfold over recent months in the Cyprus Mail, its about time the island had some sort of coherent public transport, the Taxi drivers have been ripping of visitors and residents alike for too long. Just ask them to put the meter on and most will just tell you to get out.. I hope [but cant see it] that the government stands firm and instead of reducing buses reduces the number of taxi licenses and enforces the set rate and use of meters. I have never worked out why a trip of say PFO to one of the hotels in town is around 30 euro when you can go twice that distance for 15 euro in Greece [and its metered]
I've just learned how to play backgammon too - mainly to keep the taxi drivers company (and to challenge Andreas in October!)
Cypruschick - glad you found the service so good
is backgammon hard to play (well) ?... I keep looking at it when passing and thinking nothing about what they are doing looks obvious in anyway..
Very easy to learn - very hard to master. Found a useful online version on nabisco's website (yes - strange) and a good tutorial on youtube. It's probably no harder than draughts really.
I've just added a backgammon game on my android phone... will have a play about with it..
Tavli differs a little from the Western version of backgammon. There is no doubling cube, and Gammons and Backgammons are scored the same. These differences apart, the game of Tavli takes on the same rules as the Western version.
The game I've learned is effectively portes - which to all intents and purposes is the same as backgammon.
