I would guess that the nearest of the three dams( the Eder) is at least 150 miles from where you are staying.
The Eder Dam (Ederstausee) is south west of Kassel near to the town/village of Waldeck. The Möhne (Möhnestausee) is about 45km south east of Dortmund a few kms north of Arnsberg and the Sorpestausee is a few kms southwest of Arnsberg.

How are you travelling? It may be easier to make it a stop en-route.

Travelling from Zeebrugge. Will have a look tonight, a slight diversion arriving at camp a early evening rather than mmid afternoon or a full day out and the expense of fuel that goes with it. Food for thought.

Did I see on another forum that you were heading down to the Black Forest area after your first stop. You could possibly have a break at one of the dams on your way.

Judith, thanks.

You're right we are. Going to get the maps out later and have a look at the possibility of either on the way or between sites. Don't want to miss out but don't fancy such a long day out either.

Judiths plan sounds good for a short brak at a dam.

On you way from Zeebrugge you could stop off at Rheinberg Military cemetery where many of the casualties from 617 squadron ended up. See http://www.cwgc.org/search/cemetery_details.aspx?cemetery=2002800&mode=1 for directions, not a huge detour.

Had the atlas out and it looks like we can get to the Mohne Dam with a diversion of about 25 miles from the motorway on the way out. Looks like it's 2 roads to get there so that's looking favourite at the moment. Got hubby to agree to an extra hour and half or so on the journey.

Like the look of the cemetery but can't really do both. I've seen plenty of cemeteries having spent a few days in Ypres last year. The dams were on my hit list (so to speak) this year.

Hope you enjoy your trip. The weather is lovely at the moment but it's supposed to change over the weekend.

Got back yesterday with all best laid plans having gone to pot.

2 hours late docking in Zeebrugge on the way out as a gas tanker beat us into port (no other ships are allowed into port during this time) so my plans to stop on the way out went out of the window. It was 5.30 by the time we got to camp.

We must have picked the worst day weather wise to be moving down to the Black Forest, rain (torrential at times) for most of the journey. Not a chance of visiting anything on the way and I wouldn't have got to appreciate it anyway.

Will get there some day though and I did get to Arnhem last week whilst we were in Holland so some consolation.
