Me, a boyfriend, his friend and his girlfriend all decided one weekend we would like to go away for a winter holiday and thought the Canaries would probably be an ideal place to go as we needed to be back before Christmas. My boyfriend and his friend both worked at Securicor and weren't allowed time off in the lead up to and over Christmas...
So, on Monday lunchtime me and Jackie trotted off to Stuart Hall travel agents near Market Street in Manchester to suss out a "deal".
We ended up with a choice of 2 weeks S/C in Gran Canaria at GBP 179pp or 2 weeks plus 1 week free S/C in a 2 bedroom apt in Cyprus for GBP 189pp. We had absolutely no idea where Cyprus was at the time and had to get the agent to show us just whereabouts the island was located.
Of course, we were SOLD straightaway and why not? After all 3 weeks hols instead of 2 sounded wonderful.
We told the lads that night the choice and after much discussion they decided to tell a small fib and book 2 weeks off work and yes, we plumped for Limassol, Cyprus! That was in 1985. Securicor weren't too impressed when the guys told them 3 days before we travelled that they suddenly realised it was 3 weeks we had booked and not 2 but they had already checked with the travel agent and been informed we couldn't come back any sooner as the flight was fully booked! We had a brilliant time and that's when I first fell in love with Cyprus...
In 2004 I came to live permanently in Cyprus with my husband (but not the same guy I came on holiday with back in 1985)
My now husband first visited Cyprus in 1992 when we came back again for another 3 week winter holiday - good job he liked it!
So, don't be too worried about ending up somewhere you didn't intend going to in the first place. Good things can come of it!

Over 12 years ago I went into a travel agent to book a holiday in Cyprus and came out having booked to go to Tunisia. As I was working in a school then I could only go during school holidays and wanted the February half term but there were no Saturday or Sunday flights from my area. The TA suggested Tunisia and since it was only for a week and I'd previously been to North Africa (Morocco) I decided to chance it. The rest, as they say, is history. I've been there at least twice a year since then and will be back in April.
Not quite the same I know, but I did have a holiday to Las vegas once instead of a new kitchen. As I said to my hubby at the time, the kitchen isnt going to bring me lasting happy memories but a holidays will!! God I hated that kitchen though !
My philosophy is that when I'm sitting in my rocking chair I'm not going to remember that carpet I bought but I will remember my holidays, so no new carpet
Spot on Glynis - new washing machine,dishwasher...........or Havana at sunset, a rhino in Kruger at dawn, humpback whales in Samana Bay..no comparison
My mum and dad drove the 60 miles back to their home town last year to pay their annual visit to the dentists and came home with a LandRover Discovery
I came back with a puppy instead of the brochures and never went on holiday that year.
Crazy or what?
Sanji
But I guess the puppy gave you a lot of fun and laughter for far longer than a couple of weeks.
The rest is history!!! I have lived there now for 20 years. In fact it will be 20 years exactly, tomorrow 9th April!! It was the day of the General Election, and I remember hubby and I discussing whether we should actually go and vote before we set off for the airport
Thirteen years ago, we went to a TA to try and book for Northern Cyprus, there was nothing available and so the assistant asked if we had ever been to Turkey which we hadn't. She recommended a hotel that she and her family had been to and so we tried it and haven't looked back since, apart from having been to Kos but we still took the ferry to Bodrum on market day !! On the subject of Malta, you can usually get some good deals out of the weekend newspapers around Christmas for March/April time, we stayed in Bugibba for a week. This was a culture trip for the wife, we hired a car and went all over the island as well as taking the ferry to Gozo and seeing the sights there.
