Apparently if you take the garment and the Soltan back to Boots, you will be reimbursed at least the cost of the suncream

I might try that with son's white t-shirts and union jack shorts - he uses the very high factor kids Soltan product; the price of the suncream will buy at least two multipacks of plain t-shirts from Primark :o

I know that a few years back the orange suncream from Boots was recalled, because of this exact problem. There can't be any harm in giving it a go.

And this is going slightly off topic but when my little girl was a baby one of her dresses was ruined when she was sick after eating a Boots baby meal. I just couldn't get the stains out. Casually mentioned it to one of the staff when I was next in Boots and they told me to take the dress into them, which I did, and a few weeks later got gift vouchers worth more than the dress sent in the post from Boots Head Office. Worth a try!

I used Avon cream this year and did manage to get a blob of it on my white t-shirt. I washed it but it didn't come out so I just soaked it for about half an hour in water with a dash of bleach, came out completely :D It's always worth a try. I get loads of stains out with bleach as long as it's on white clothes of course

I remember last year my neighbour used some suncream on hols and it stated on the bottle that it didn't stain clothing however it did on most of their swimwear. She wrote and complained to the company and they re-imbursed her for the cost of the bikinis!

I always had a problem with yellow stains round the neck of hubbies white t-shirts from the suncream he used. I always use Australian Gold suncream which doesn`t contain mineral oils, which my skin can`t tolerate and I never have any problems with staining. I make him use my suncream now and it has totally stopped the staining. I can only presume it`s the mineral oil which causes the problem.

How strange to find this thread. I have just come back from a cruise, didn't go near a pool, but used Simple suncream and Superdrug's own. On my white towelling robe I noticed orangey stains the colour of spaghetti hoop sauce. I tried to think if I had eaten anything like that at lunch but more stains appeared at other places on the garment. I ended up throwing it away and was totally mystified. These stains were different to the underarm yellow discolouration that I took to be from the suncream.

Once again this year, even though i posted earlier saying how cream lotions stain clothes, i used Avon sun cream and ended up dying my lovely brand new expensive blue swimsuit a lovely shade of green around the shoulder straps and front.

Also got a few of my tops - but its the swimsuit im more bothered about. I havent washed it yet for fear that the stain will be permanently there - is there something i can use in that crucial first wash to get the stain out?

Also, i was right - all the spray lotions we used didnt stain - only the cream type.

GlitterGirl, I can't help you with the stain although I don't hold out much hope that you'll get it out :? It never came out of my white top after washing it but it did with some bleach. Of course you can't do that with a blue costume. Why don't you try contacting Avon and explain what's happened, unless it states on the bottle that it may cause discolouration to clothing. The bottle of Avon lotion we used does state it but it's worth a check.

I guess one thing you could try is ACE bleach, that's supposed to be safe on colours, not sure about costume's though because of the material type.

Ultrasun doesn't stain, and it's a true once a day application. I think they specifically advertise it as non statining. I use the 17 which has got tiny gold glimmers when gives the skin a gentle glow/sprakle (NOT like the James Bond film ha ha!) and my husband uses the 20 which is a liquid gel and great at sinking in seeing as he's so hairy!

Well I changed my suncreams this year & still had stains on my bikinis. I've put them through 2 60 degree washes & they're not too bad. What concerns me this year is the brown stains on the clothes which I wore out in the night. It looks like 2 white dresses & a pair of white linen trousers are ruined. I can only put this down to my after sun which was the Beta Carotene one by Avon. It was applied directly after showering I then had to dry my hair apply make up etc, so it had plenty of time to soak in before I dressed. Its not just round the straps and armholes that are stained, its whole sections of the clothes. I'm really disappointed that this has happened. I'm fed up of having clothes ruined by creams.

I know what you mean - you'd think they'd manage to make some that didn't stain your clothes - after all they cost enough! Or at least have a warning on the bottle to say it may cause staining. What a shame your lovely clothes are ruined - did you think the Avon stuff was good (staining aside)It got good reviews on here but so did Elemis which I bought and didn't rate!

Glad to report, no dirty marks from creams this year ;)

swimwear is normally handwash only as the elastication wears quicker on normal washes and isn't as effective! I have put the whitener sachets in with all our holiday clothes and swimwear that are stained from sunlotions and it works brilliantly even in handwash mode I even added a little bit of oxi to the drum for extra measures on the clothes. This year we noticed all the whites on our swimwear turned yellow when we were in the pools so not sure if the chlorine and suncream together create the stains but then you dont wear clothes in the pool so that does not explain that staining!

Kimi - I don't rate the Elemis either. I did think that the Avon Beta Carotene was better. It also had a lovely coconut smell. Hubby could even smell it on my nightwear, and that was hours after it was applied. I think I might write to Avon, just to see what they say. My white trousers have been on around 4 holidays with me, so I don't mind them being stained, but 1 dress had only been worn twice and the other was brand new.

Whilst Beta Carotene is completely natural and found in foods such as carrots and mangoes, it is used as a food dye/colourant and I'm sure it is the culprit, Helen, as it has quite a bit of staying power as anybody who has spilt mango juice on a white T-shirt can probably testify. It's not a strong colourant but I suspect it doesn't soak into the skin as such but rather just dries on your skin and remains as a very thin layer on the top. Any dampness on your skin would then 'liquefy' it again. This is why I avoid the more gel like aftersuns if the weather is humid - I hate the sliminess of them on your skin once you start to sweat. Particularly unpleasant in bed at night!

Unfortunately, if you put your linen stuff through a 60C wash too that might have actually set the stains. You could try soaking them in good old fashioned bleach but I would contact Avon about this. If they don't have a warning on the packaging that it could stain clothes then you'd have a good case for compensation from them. Alternatively, they might have had other complaints and might well know how to deal with such stains.

This year yet again I've had to throw 2 bikinis and one of hubby's vests away, because of discolouration. I also saw a number of white towels and t shirts round the pool area, that looked the same. It's not just round the armholes e.t.c Both bikinis were white on the inside and are now a funny light brownish- green colour. Hubby's white vest has brownish streaks on it in various places. I've given them all 2 60 degree washes, and put 2 capfuls of vanish in the machine - to no avail. The only suncreams I used this year were Piz Buin. I'm fed up with having to throw tidy clothes away.
