Yes, we used our all the time to admire the breathtaking views. The picture in my avatar was taken from our balcony while having a couple of drinks in the evening. 
The view from our Balcony in Gran Canaria, I did have a better photo that this but somehow I have it locked

I used to like sitting on my balcony in the mornings watching the boats going out. Was a great place to relax
We always use our balcony on a night.....have always hated seeing babies and toddlers sleeping in buggies while parents get sloshed in bars so we've always done it so we've eaten as a family earlier in the evening and come their bed-time (or a little after) we've headed back to the apartment, put the kids down for the night and then sat on the balcony playing cards, reading, playing DS's...whatever mood we were in.
Still do it now altho' with kids now older they have a later bedtime and sometimes sit out with us.
