Dominican Republic - Punta Cana

Going back to Dominican Republic in August for a week. Staying in Punta Cana. Last time we went we stayed in the South of the island, way back in 2004 for our honeymoon. Can anyone advise whether its best to take US Dollars or Dominican Pesos or a mixture of both? The last time we took dollars but like I said, it was 7 years ago.

Also, we are staying at the Excellence Punta Cana. I believe this is way out of the main part. We've got some friends who will be in Dominican at the same time as us that we were hoping to meet up with. Can anyone advise how possible this would be. I wish I could remember their hotel name ... would make things a lot easier I guess lol

US Dollars are widely accepted so I'd take them. Depending on where your friends are staying, it'll certainly be possible to meet up somewhere in town if you get a taxi.

We stayed in Dreams La romana, flying in to Punta Cana airport a couple of years ago. We took American dollars but had great difficulty changing larger notes into small ones for tipping. The bureau de change at the hotel and the shop never seemed to have small change. Even when I went to buy something in the shop in order to get change they'd ask me if I had anything smaller and when I said no I was told that they'd charge it to the room which was no good as I needed the change for tipping.

Just be aware that if you take all dollars have smaller denominations ready for tips :tup

I think I will take a mixture of both US Dollars and Pesos so I have smaller notes for tipping.

Friends are staying in the Sirenis Tropical Suites, I managed to find on google map that they arent far from us at all.

Cant wait... 3 weeks on Saturday till we fly out

Hi, we sayed at (secrets) excellence Punta Cana a few years ago... it was a great holiday, but you're correct... the hotel is MILES away from anywhere else and excursions were a pain...

Another word of warning... beware the sand fleas on the beach... get away from it about 1600...

looking at going somewhere in dominican in november, would like lively resort, also is there anywhere to walk to ie shops restaurants? we went to mexico few years ago an could walk to 5th avenue in playa de carman from playacar, would like somewhere similar please can anyone help?
