Hi Guys for years now we have always used the Egypt Free shop in Luxor.
Basically you are allowed up to 3ltres of spirits duty free on EACH passport as long as you visit the shop within the first 48hrs of arriving in Luxor . Obviously I wouldn,t be getting all my allowance because I would never be sober in the fortnight we are there ha
Usually this allows my wife to get two bottles of Baileys at uk airport and I just get a bottle of whiskey later in resort...
However this is no longer the case, as we were turned away from the duty free shop after being told ;
"the government have stopped it from this week" (23rd Dec)
You can still buy duty free at the airport on arrival at Luxor just not at the shop.
Wifey wasn,t too pleased when I helped her finish her Baileys ha
There is however an offlicence over by the big market that sells all sorts of alcohol should you need it.
English duty free whisky has been known to be for sale here, but at a high price = £35 ltr Bells
Needless to say I didnt buy that but I did get a passable bottle of Egyptian bottled "english" whisky for about £15
An ex-pat I spoke to said the manager at duty free had been caught on the fiddle and that was why its not in use but, i,m not so sure it could all be a part of "The New Egypt" thats coming.

Was that just on spirits or did it apply to cigarettes and everything else?
We've visited the shop also on our visits and last time we were at Karnak so friends of ours went there too.

English whisky!!! Wash you mouth out! I'm sure Bell's would be interested to know that they had moved south of the border.
Wash you mouth out!
Ha. Mouth Wash is probably stronger than the Egyptian versions of whisky.
Wifeys cousin and I sat drinking "Egyptian" whisky on board a cruiser one night many years ago,,,13 doubles each and we still didn,t fall in the Nile
I do apologise for insulting Mr Bell though , but the term "English Whisky" was the vendors name for it, I did buy an English style whisky that was bottled in Egypt and it was 40% proof too, called Auld Stag. Quite passable..
They do have some funny names though, like Johnny Wadi Red Table instead of Johnny walker Red Label, and Gordoons Gin
I,m not sure about the smokes at the duty free shop, but I do remember the guy saying you can buy 200 and 1 ltr UPON ENTRY at the airport.
To come home you can still buy anything you could want at the airport, we brought my brother 400 Superkings @£21 sterling.

Ha, well if they are selling "English whisky" then you know it is fake.
